3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a hazy/cloudy amber color with off-white head. Citrus, pine, and grassy on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes a bit lighter than I expected, light bodied almost.

3.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
750 ml - pours a dark rusty orange . Big Brett and barnyard tart aromas. Taste leaves a bit to be desired ... Thin , faint hop bitterness , almost no sourness . Drinkable but a bit of a let down from JP .

ottle, shared with a group. Cloudy light amber brown with a very lively head. Yeaty, lightly funky, lightly fruity roma. Lively mouthfeel, spicy and funky elements dominate the palate, yeasty more than malty, dry almost tart finish. Not what I was expecting,

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
0.75l bottle shared with The Tasting Crew. When popping the cap the beer pops up up from the bottle and gives us a greaving "hello". It pours a cloudy orange-ish body with a nice big and lasting off-white head. On the aroma this is light funky-sour with lot’s of sour red berries. Also something that reminds me of wheat and palms. Quite interesting and complex. It has a high carbonation level and a thin almost watery texture. The flavor is mildly sour and quite bitter. Light woody-grassy also this one. Ends of really grassy-bitter - almost like fresh cut grass - in a watery finish. Interesting flavors, a bit lack in the body, but nice. 16.06.2012

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle (Batch 1046/1047, bottled 3-16-2012), thanks to OldMrCrow! Bottle was a bit of a gusher, but a slow, easily contained one. Pours murky brown-gold with pillowy white head. Aroma: mineral, dusty, musty, some earthiness. Taste: Light sweetness, with mineral and some biscuit in the lingering finish. Palate: Light-medium body, ample carbonation, very drinkable. Overall: I’d think of this as more of a biere de garde than a saison, and not even remotely sour. Really quite pleasant -- love the low ABV, and held its own nicely side-by-side with tonight’s other saisons (Fantome Pissenlet and Grassroots Arctic Saison), while being completely different than either of them. This would be welcome at my table most any night.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Fresh bottle from Belmont Station.
I cracked this one as part of a saison mini-tasting with Prufrockstar and Mrs. Prufrock. Up against the excellent though very different saisons of Hill Farmstead Arctic Saison and Fantome Pissenlit, both substantially higher in ABV, this one was a decided underdog and yet came through to win the day. It didn’t offer the complexity of either of the other beers (interesting for JP to be less complex than comparators), but for pure enjoyment and drinkability it was the beer of the night.
Jolly Pumpkin beers are gushers, and there was no excuse for me to forget this. But forget I did, and some fraction of the beer ended up on the table. Oops. Once we got it under control it provided a copper pour with a fluffy white head. Drying brett aroma, more dust and less hay. As expected, this beer was richly minerally in true JP fashion. Less expected from a JP beer, it was (1) very dry and (2) not in the least sour. The malt presence kept this one fuller and rounder than the excellent sour Hill Farmstead Arctic Saison with while we paired it. (Aside: this pairing is a great example of classification gone wrong. HF Arctic is a sour beer classified as a saison; this is a saison classified as a sour.) At the same time, these malts brough none of sweetness of JP pissenlit, the other comparator saison for the night. While the aroma was pure saison -- no hop juiciness -- the flavor carried a substantial drying grapefruit pith. While the beer came off as somewhat thinner than the comparators, the discrepancy was far lower than one would expect given the JP’s 1.8% and 3.2% deficits in ABV. Splendidly drinkable, I can’t say enough about how much I wish this were readily available in Seattle.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled 4/16/2012. Pours moderately hazy orange amber color with a big 3 finger dense and rocky off white head with insane retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of green apple, lemon zest, orange zest, pear, grass, hay, pepper, herbal, brett funk, bread, and floral/yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of hop and fruity/spicy yeast/brett notes; with good strength. Taste of green apple, pear, lemon zest, orange zest, bread, pepper, clove, grass, hay, herbal, brett funk, bread, and floral/yeast earthiness. Good amount of tart earthy spiciness/bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruits, citrus, pepper, clove, hay, grass, herbal, brett funk, bread, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of hops with fruity/spicy yeast/brett flavors with a fair amount of malt presence; with a moderately dry finish with no cloying flavors. High carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very crisp and prickly mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.7%. Overall this is a damn nice hoppy saison style. All around good balance and complexity of hops and fruity/spicy yeast and brett flavors; and extremely crisp and smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
