COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is the original batch of La Roja, brewed in 2004, and aged in a single bourbon barrel for 18 months. This is an unblended version of La Roja (red capped 12 oz. bottles).

Bottle that moejuck/baldwizard gave me for graduating pharmacy school. Who gives away their favorite overall beer as a gift, only Joe. Thanks again. I had this at a tasting a long time ago and never rated it. Pours a beautiful deep red with some brown hues and a very light carbonation. Aroma is very sharp and acidic with some of the oak coming through. Flavor is mind blowingly good. Very acetic but still delicious. One of my favorite american sours.

Bottle: Thanks, Mike. Ruby-tinted, dingy copper color. Not unlike the original La Roja, though maybe more opaque & murky overall. Less head, too. Subtle gray-tinted bubbles that recede quickly to a thin collar. Killer aroma of cherry skin, red apple, vinegar, huge wine-like vinousness, mild lactic acid with acetic undertones, lemon, & a wonderful oak presence. Not much "bourbon" explicitly, actually the booze is more like a red wine. A slight mildew-y cork funk is hiding in the background. Extremely tart & puckering up front with flavor of under-ripe cherries, sour apples, red grape skins, & a huge slab of old oak that’s been soaking in a bath of wine. There’s a good split between vinous & acetic. I know many people do not enough this vinegar-y flavor, but I love it when it’s not overdone. It’s perfect in this case. Once again, not as funky as the non-reserve version; just light touches of old wood, cork, & must, but that funk is more that replaced in the excessive sourness of this version. Somewhat acidic finish, ending dry as hell, hammering back the gum line a few millimeters. Great stuff.

Tiny arse bottle. Hazy orange red with a small white head. Great sour cherry and funk aroma. Flavor is fairly sour and funky with big cherry and red fruits. Sharp acidity, biting palate. Really nice!

12 oz. bottle, sent from deyholla (thanks Derek), pours a murky dark amber with a tiny head. Nose is quite acetic, with notes of sourness, bourbon, and dark fruits. Flavour is very similar, with bourbon soaked dark sour fruits, some oxidation, and vinegar characterizing it. Can’t say I’m a huge fan of this to be honest - I just don’t think sour ales are that well-suited for bourbon barrel aging. Good for what it is, but severely overrated.

Smell is bourbon red wine vanilla. Pours maroon. Taste is smooth oxidized dry wine and light bourbon. Light carbonation thin body.

Thanks to HisBoyElroy. It pours a faded dark red that’s still transparent. A silky light lacing and head. A tart sourness with a vinegar finish. Very good and drinkable. A big tart finish that stays on the lips. Very good stuff.

Bottle at home with friends, courtesy of Matt. Big thanks for this one! Pour is hazy orange with no head. Big vinegar, light caramel, urine, lemon peel, citrusy, and bready aroma. Taste is orange juice, sour vinegar, oak, cherries, grapefruit, urine, and lemons with a huge acetic sour finish. Light body with medium carbonation. Nice stuff.

Small bottle shared by Dave. Aroma is an underripe red wine like a tempernio or pinot noir, oak, and cherry. Pours dull red with lots of carbonation. Taste is nice and tart with a very oaky pinot noir, sour cherry and some lemon. Very complex beer.

Bottle shared by tom10101, HUGE thanks! I owe you some! Pours a clear dark orange with no head and so no lacing. Aroma is sour cherries and wood, and by "sour cherries" I mean a full lactic acid shot to the nose. This one also felt a little more alcoholic than the regular but I must be imagining things. Taste is dry and not bracingly sour but a lot more acetic than the regular La Roja... Still mighty drinkable and refreshing! Carbonation was soft and not distracting. Overall a really nice product but not one that I’d consider vastly superior to the regular offering!

Bottle (12 oz). 2011 vintage. Thanks Mark! Slightly hazy reddish amber with a small off-white head and little lacing. Aroma is of oak, acetic, red fruits (mainly cherries), light vanilla and some lemony notes. Taste is slightly sweet and moderately to heavily acetic with oak, red fruits, light vanilla and light earthy notes. Medium body. Moderately dry. Mouth puckering. Quite complex and the balance isn’t bad at all considering how acetic the beer is. Really enjoyable.

Reddish amber pour with a small off white head. Aroma of sour caramels, cherries, musty oak, some basement, yeah. Jesus. This one is tart, musty, funky, tannic, and just....jolly pumpkin to the core turned up to 11. My buddy says 12 or 13 even. Sour on the finish, bit of oxidation, bit of sweetness. Not bone dry, not too tannic, not too sour. Just overall, yeah, so good. So interesting.
