La Roja is brewed in the Flanders tradition. We blend this beer from oak barrels where the beer has been aging for 12 months or longer. We’ve added 10 lbs. of cherries and let this beer mature for additional time in the firkin. Truly an ale of grace and distinction. La Roja is a beer that we offer year round. Roja du Kriek is a beer that we made special for you at the Great Taste of the Midwest. Mahalo Plenty.

Great Taste, 2009. One of the best aromas of the day, with notes of orange, fig, apricot, and bing cherry. On the palate is plenty of funk, and the beer shows its complexity and the craft of the brewer. Notes of dried stone fruit and red wine vinegar, with a finish of vanilla and toasty oak. Not quite as refreshing on a hot day as the other JP beers were, but this was the most complex among them.

750 capped bottle from Whole Foods and Capone’s. This one is a gusher. Pours turbid copper toward ruby with frothy, off-white head. Nose was tart cherry, yeasty funk, oaky tannins. Tastes dry, with notes of cherry, oak, yeasty funk. Reminds me of a yeastier cherry version of Sly Fox Blackberry Reserve. Decent kriek.

Brown/red pour. Small, persistent off white head. Lacing. Aroma of caramel and syrup. Slight tartness and dry astringency. Watery. Plums and burnt syrup. Almost a cough syrupness to it. Misses the mark for me.

750ml bottle. Poured a cloudy amberish color with ruby highlights and a smaller sized off white head. Woody, cherries, cherry juice, lighter funk, and a lighter tart finish.

750ml bottle thanks to Eric. Cloudy orange/brown pour, smallish beige airy head. Cherries as expected in the aroma, along with some candy elements, and a bit of wood. Taste adds some vanilla to the cherries, as well as additional barrel notes, a bit dusty and musty.

>> Murky red orange color with thicker head and, fantastic lace especially for style. Spiced cinnamon baked apple pie nose with hints of vanilla as it warms up. Taste begins with very soft carbonation, leather, low to no acid, Brett only it seems, low cranberry, low cherry. It hits the mouthfeel and flavors of Flemish red but has almost no acid. It works, though, being infinitely drinkable like a cross between dark saison and Flemish red. Super soft body - this one evaporated from the glass.

Draught at Hop Cat. Pours with little carbonation. Reddish brown. Light sour with some nice wine/grape notes. Very smooth. Oak stands out.
