hellomisterp (32), Pennsylvania, USA Oct 29, 2009 22.5 oz. Batch 266. Explosion from the start!! roasty aroma that that has notes of sour grapes. A nice bitter start with great coffee taste. To my delight this one surprised me with a very tart finish and no signs of the 8.1 ABV. This is a well crafted beer. Delicious. patrickfannon (271), Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 29, 2009 Bottle. 22.5 oz. Pours opaque brown with a thick, firm, beige head. Aroma of coffe, chocolate roasted malts, grapes, cinnamon, and clove. Full, smooth mouthfeel, with a slight warming tingle. Heavy, solid finish. Excellent stout from Jolly Pumpkin. nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Oct 18, 2009 Bottle shared by mfielden - thanks, Mark! Black in color with nice creamy head that settles to a film, with a little lacing. Aroma is somewhat lactic with roast, caramel, and some hops. Flavor is roasty and tart (seems lactic) with chocolate and some hops. Nice sharp but smooth palate with medium body and no booziness to speak of. Pretty good and interesting overall. thewolf (5623), Kolding, Denmark Oct 2, 2009 Bottle, bought @ Ølbutiikken, Cph.
Pours lovely black with a fine, steady, creamy, beige head. Lots of coffee in the aroma, dark chocolate, light brett, caramel. Highish carbonation, fine dry mouthfeel. Flavour has lots of tartness at first. Then roasted malts, coffee and lovely dark chocolate. Quite harsh in its tartness, but it is somehow really lovely and easy-drinking still. The ABV is perfectly hidden. FunkyBrewster (435), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 29, 2009 Batch 360/362. Pours black with a big pillowy light brown head. Aroma is very coffee and coffee bean, big chocolate malt, Very nice sharp fruity character. Flavor has a very strong black coffee note, sharp tart fruitiness balanced with the chocolate malt and leads to a lightly bitter and woody finish. The sharpness lingers for a bit and leaves the bitterchocolate flavor. Medium to full body and a soft carbonation. A nice stout that balances the sweet very well, I enjoyed the sharp tartness in the beer. curly (548), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Sep 28, 2009 Pours solid black with a substantial creamy light brown head. Aroma is a very fruity stout with peach, cherry, apricot, and also sweet chocolate with hop spice. Interesting taste, conflicting styles and neither dominates nor matches completely in unison with the other. Has a sort of sour Saison, Belgian taste with a light chocolate stout. Finishes with some roast characteristics. Butters (1622), Virginia, USA Sep 28, 2009 Sampled at the ’Butter’s Last Supper’ tasting. Batch 359/363. Pours a midnight black with good dark brown sustainable head. Nose of coffee and chocolate are masked by a persistent tartness. Flavor is great tartness, suplemented with some roast and chocolate and coffee. This is truly unique beer. But I’m not sure I would want another. Badass label art. MmmcKay (269), Brentwood, Tennessee, USA Sep 28, 2009 Creamy tan head. Roasty and vegetal. Reminds me of roasted red peppers. Sweet fruit. Slightly tart. Hard to drink a lot of this. Very unique. Very interesting. Well worth trying, but man I wouldn’t want to drink more than a pour or two.
