From a 0.75 L bottle. A tall airy sand-colored head, upon a dark brown body with good clarity. Dry, light sourish aroma, featuring dark fruits, mocha, some wood tones, and mildly roasted malts. Feels light in the mouth, despite the 8.1 % abv. Dryish, chalky mouthfeel. Mild rounded fruity sourness. Quite dry, with roasted chocolate-flavored dark malts. Discreetly hopped. A pretty good one, reminds me of beefed up dry stout.

Deep black in color... Aroma of sour acidity and roasted malts... Flavor was unexpected, roasted malts took a back seat to the intense sour tartness, body was thin enough to make to acidity prevalent and dominate, however roasted Malts and chocolate throughout... Push past the limits of sense and sensibilities, from the known into the unknown. Fall way off the map, and here there be monsters. 750 ml. bottle, 1200th rating, I chose this as a milestone because this is the most interesting beer in my fridge at this time, sounds awesome, and the label is the coolest label I have seen in a long time, and that does matter in my opinion- Pours almost totally black with red highlights in the light and a one finger light tan head that reduces to a thin blanket yet never quite goes away. Aroma is like a Belgian sour, tart, tang, some dark fruits. The taste is sour with a stout twist, medium tartness, not sure what bugs they use, but they are very good imparting a very complex, actually one of the more complex beers in the Jolly Pumpkin lineup, it doesn’t have that unsweetened Koolaid taste that a lot of their beers have, just a nice mellow tartness with a dark light roasted taste. Body is medium and carbonation is spot on. I don’t think this is the best beer out there, but pretty damn good, much more than as the style says a "stout", so much more. And I think I am going to keep this bottle, very badass!

Very interesting and unique stout. Dark body, white head. Prominent coffee roasted malts aroma. Taste, though, has this additional sour Belgian yeast element, vinous, interesting.

Midnight pour with a creamy latte head that leaves a delicate coating inside of the glass. This one also shows the very distinct JP qualities with a tart cherry skin, lemon zest, unripened citrus and woodiness that accompanies the cocoa, roasted malt, and caramel goodness. Definitely the best sour stout I’ve tried. Others seem forced, but the balance here makes this not only drinkable but sought after. Will pick up another.

Draft at Hopleaf. Pours pitch black with a foamy, compact tan head. Aroma is that typical JP sour woodiness. taste is tart cherries, oak, wet wood, lemons, roasted malt nitterness and a balanced amount of funkiness. Bright sour finish. A really interesting beer that has a great baalnce between sourness and roasted bitter stout notes. Really well done and gets the award for best tap handle I’ve seen in awhile.

Black pour with a 1 finger, creamy tan head. Aroma of roast, roasted nuts, tart funkiness, chocolate, day old coffee, dark caramel, wet leather, green wood, tart, under ripe berries and earthy fallen leaves. Flavor is roast, nuts and chocolate up front, a hint of tartness comes in then along with earthy wood, light smoke, leather, then some dry earth, a little funk, burnt sugar, musty hay and light earthy pine. Medium body, off dry feel throughout with a slightly chalky feel, light, but sharp carbonation and slightly acidic feel. Good stuff, I would love to try more funky stouts, so far I think it is just this and New Glarus Old English Porter.

Batch 981 Bottled 02-07-2012 P: A pitch black abyss graced by a cappuccino micro bubble head that dissipates to a wake of air bubbles hiding the beast beneath. S: Typical JP funky yeast backed by rich bakers chocolate and cocoa powder. The aroma reminds me of a caramel Cadbury egg. Sweet prunes, berries and dry white grapes. T/M: Super sour and acidic start that is flanked by rich cherry brownies, chocolate covered berries, coffee liqueur and cookie wafers. Moderate acidic zesty body that prickles the tongue. O: An interesting beer that challenges the palate and questions the stout boundaries. I wasn’t sure about this at first and it took it a while to sink in. I like this for its complexity but not really something I would drink often.

From bottle at HOTB. Sour Coco Wheat! Funky and chocolatey nose with hints of coffee and molasses. Muddy coffee-brown with thin cocoa-colored lacing head. Medium body with silky carbonation. Tart stout with tons of cocoa powder and wonderfully tart finish. Smooth.
