Black pour with a 1 finger, creamy tan head. Aroma of roast, roasted nuts, tart funkiness, chocolate, day old coffee, dark caramel, wet leather, green wood, tart, under ripe berries and earthy fallen leaves. Flavor is roast, nuts and chocolate up front, a hint of tartness comes in then along with earthy wood, light smoke, leather, then some dry earth, a little funk, burnt sugar, musty hay and light earthy pine. Medium body, off dry feel throughout with a slightly chalky feel, light, but sharp carbonation and slightly acidic feel. Good stuff, I would love to try more funky stouts, so far I think it is just this and New Glarus Old English Porter.

Merveilleux! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750 mL bottle. Looks like a stout with no head. Smells like a sour. Taste is mouth puckeringly sour. It tastes like a stout for a fraction of a second before the sourness hits, and at the end there is a lingering hint of roast. Good beer, but itís not a stout.

Belgian inspired stout, oak aged, bottle conditioned, roasty malts and bitter hops. Funny how you get your expectations set and then... As I poured there was little head and the nose was like balsamic. Even after that I was shocked at the first sip--nothing on the bottle said sour--and didnít like it immediately. Shifted gears and evaluated it as a sour and think itís OK. I canít call it a stout though.

Tap @ Jolly Pumpkin: Looks like squidís ink outlined by a small trace of ecru foam around the very top. Aroma loaded with heavy black cherry skins, tannin, wet oak, funky critter notes, lacto sourness, mild vinegar & acetic sharpness, perfume, lemon, & some red grape. Sharp sweet tart flavor up front, very tart. Even more than expected. Lemon, lacto yeast, dark cherries, oaky tannins, musty oak, moldy cotton funk, & a ripping cherry skin dryness in the back-end. Leaves some balsamic vinegar notes lingering in the aftertaste with a moderate acetic & acidic burn, but not enough to hinder things too much. Really, not many of the stout characteristics come through. Almost more like a really dark Flanders Red. Maybe a hint of roastiness, but the focus here is more on the sour vinegar & cherry notes. Nice stuff.

Probably a good beer but i hated the sour taste. Maybe for someone else. A friend liked it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured from bomber. Pours dark brown almost black with a thin tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, with cocoa, tart cherries, dried plums, light licorice and yeasty funk. Flavor starts off roasted malt and dark chocolate followed with sour fruity flavors of tart cherries, berries, and prunes that carries through the finish of coffee roastiness and yeasty earthiness. Nice Brew but a bomber for one person is a bit much, should have split it.

Pitch black with a dense one-finger head and ok lace. Dark fruit aromas dominate with a modest infusion of coffee and cocoa. Flavor is similar, as dark fruit sourness predominates - mostly black cherry and tart apple - with gentle hops bitterness in the background. Full body, minimal carbonation, silky mouthfeel and a puckishly sour finish. There are black IPAs, why shouldnít there be black sours?

This beer pours a very dark brown color with a small tan head, and the aroma blends sour dark fruit, roasted malts, and dark chocolate. The taste isnít a traditional stout due to the heavy sour presence, but there is an underlying touch of umami and a slight bitterness. The palate fuses a lively carbonation, slick texture, and a light body.

Pours clear dark brown (nearly black) with one fat finger of medium tan head, good retention and lacing. (4/5) Nose is complex, vinous dark fruit, coffee, chocolate, earthy funk. (8/10) Taste is mild sweet, moderate tart, faint bitter. (8/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, drying tart finish. (4/5) Well, first and foremost: calling this a ďstoutĒ is pretty misleading. Itís most definitely a sour, albeit a dark one with coffee and chocolate tones. Thatís not to say itís aggressively sour, because it isnít (although it does open up and get a little more emphatic as it warms). And it is goo-ood. (16/20)
