COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich brown ale inspired by the enigmatic monastic brews of Belgium, and the mysterious mist shrouded jungles of the tropics. Brewed with real cacao, and spiced with cinnamon and sweet orange peel for a sensual delight. A brew to be sipped, savored, and enjoyed!

Red / brown with a medium beige head. Aroma is raisin, cinnamon, spices, fruits. Light body and fizzy carbonation. Taste is sour, spicy, cacao. abrupt finish.

Shared bottle with RBBC at local tasting in Bergen. Pours murky orange, small creamy white head. Aroma of wood, cinnamon, red apples, oranges and farmhouse. Taste is fresh, crisp acidic sour, spicy malts and wood, high carbonated, dry hoppy finish.

So far one of my favorites sours, the Belgian strong brown ale comes out nicely. Very earthy with the right mount of sourness and acidity

Hazy chestnut pour with a tall, chunky beige head. Aroma is bretty funk, green mulberries, tart stone fruit, chocolate, sweet cinnamon and dries, sweet orange. Flavor is bretty funk up front, some roasted nutty notes, caramel, green woody notes, tart stone fruit, mineral notes, nice toast and tart citrus notes, as much like lime as they are like orange peel. Lightish body, surprisingly creamy entry, medium, to heavy and blanketing carbonation and a creamy finish with a decent acidic bite. Really tasty stuff, itís really surprising how well everything comes together in the one.

Draft pour at elliott bay pizza. Pours a red color with a fizzy thin head. Flavor is slightly sour up front, but turns more bold cherry, and dark fruit towards the finish. Sour berry aroma. I see this beer has flip flopped in style a bit. I would call it a wild ale myself. Overall a good beer.

March 1, 2015. Bottle at home.
Pale red with a large creamy off-white head. Aroma is tart fruity and spicy with cherries, apple, orange, cocoa and light cinnamon, some earthy funky notes as well. Taste is tart and dry spicy with rosemary, oak, citrus and light sweet malty notes. Finish is light dry tart spicy. Medium bodied, average carbonation.

Some sorta live rate.
Pours a deep reddish brown with a nice head & good lace.

Aroma is funky & leathery. Itís got mild spice & a little toasty malt. Plenty of ripe fruit & some oak.

The flavor offers plenty of oak & some mild herbal bitterness. Itís very dry... Nicely spicy & nicely sour. Itís got a good bit of fruit & some cocoa.

Tailspin ale fest. Has almost a coffee smell but is fairly sour. Looks good in the glass.

Pours clear pale to medium amber with two fingers of frothy off-white head, excellent retention and lacing. (5/5) Nose is complex, dry funk, apple cider vinegar, sour cherries, some spice, citrus, and cocoa. (8/10) Taste is mild sweet, mild bitter, moderate tart. (8/10) Medium body, prickly carbonation, off-dry tart finish. (4/5) Utterly unlike any brown ale Iíve ever had before. I guess thatís the thing with JP, huh? No matter what they call the beer, itís a sour. Brown ale? Sour. Stout? Sour. Saison? Sour. Witbier? Sour. Not that Iím complaining - far from it! This is an excellent, mild sour, with pleasant astringency and cellar floor funk. Iíd go so far as to say itís the best brown ale Iíve ever had - mostly because brown ales tend to be yawn-inducing at best, while this is actually interesting. (16/20)

Bottle: 99% opaque. Tawny brown center with vivid copper edges showing faint translucency. Huge, foamy, billowing light-beige cap that lasts for a while. Aroma of cherry skins, slightly vinous grapes, moderate oak, musty old-world & cellar floor funk, light critter tartness, a hint of lemon peel, & just a very small touch of toasted malts. Flavor is a bit more complex & includes some more "brown ale" characteristics (opposed to the mostly wild ale dominant aroma). Mild tobacco, caramel, cocoa powder, & a hint of spicy yeast esters. Even on the palate, though, the wild ale side still reigns supreme. Light lacto, soured oak barrel, lemon flesh, cherry skins, lots of tannin in the finish, bordering on astringent but never becoming unpleasant. Just very sharp & dry near the final moments. Back-end has stronger floral notes; earthy, dirty, woodsy, & full of damp oak. Aftertaste lingers with even more funk; some cheese rind & musty cotton blanket. Nice bite to the mouth feel. Another solid beer from Jolly Pumpkin.

(Bottle sample @ Mikkeller Bar Stockholm, Nov 16 2014) Pours a clear dark brownish amber with a huge pillowy white head that lingered for ages with lace. Aroma interesting, tart and fruity at the core (plum, apple, pear maybe?), cocoa powder, spice box, a little citrus, Brett funk, some dark bread, kind of vinous. Palate sort of follows, with a tart, lightly sour fruity core (dried fruits, citrus), hints of vinegar and Brett barnyard, yet overlaid with a reasonably strong cocoa powder note and cinnamon. Some slightly sweet caramel malts with a bit of toast perform the backing. Finish is tart, spicy, fairly dry, woody, lingering funk. Mouthfeel is quite light and watery with soft, effervescent carb. Definitely not your average brown ale, weird JP twist to it with sour/tart/spicy/chocolately/woody/funk melange. I think the biggest strike against it is that Iíd like the body to have a little more substance, to help the flavours persist in the finish more. Cool beer nonetheless, would like to try a bigger glass.
