COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich brown ale inspired by the enigmatic monastic brews of Belgium, and the mysterious mist shrouded jungles of the tropics. Brewed with real cacao, and spiced with cinnamon and sweet orange peel for a sensual delight. A brew to be sipped, savored, and enjoyed!

Pours cloudy dark amber with fluffy off white head. Smells spicy. Taste dense spices with fruit-like tartness, and some roasted malts in the distance. Good stuff.

(Bottle sample @ Mikkeller Bar Stockholm, Nov 16 2014) Pours a clear dark brownish amber with a huge pillowy white head that lingered for ages with lace. Aroma interesting, tart and fruity at the core (plum, apple, pear maybe?), cocoa powder, spice box, a little citrus, Brett funk, some dark bread, kind of vinous. Palate sort of follows, with a tart, lightly sour fruity core (dried fruits, citrus), hints of vinegar and Brett barnyard, yet overlaid with a reasonably strong cocoa powder note and cinnamon. Some slightly sweet caramel malts with a bit of toast perform the backing. Finish is tart, spicy, fairly dry, woody, lingering funk. Mouthfeel is quite light and watery with soft, effervescent carb. Definitely not your average brown ale, weird JP twist to it with sour/tart/spicy/chocolately/woody/funk melange. I think the biggest strike against it is that I’d like the body to have a little more substance, to help the flavours persist in the finish more. Cool beer nonetheless, would like to try a bigger glass.

From notes. Finally getting around to adding beers from the Detroit Zoo Brew! Enjoyed on September 26. The pour is a nice brown, somewhat amber, with a nice beige head and some good lace. The aroma has a nice fruit to it. Dark and dried, but a good fruit. There is a lot of malts and a good breadiness to go along with some funk. The mouth feel is pretty solid actually with a nice carbonation to come off as quite thick. The aftertaste is really bready with a sourness and bit of funk that I don’t typically expect in a brown, but Jolly Pumpkin does the Belgian thing pretty decently

Expected better. It's not terrible, but given previous comments, didn't live up to it for me.

Pours a dark, murky brown with a massive beige head that sticks around forever. The nose is pleasantly fruity and estery but hard to define. Sour fruit and light clove spice in the middle with milk and dark chocolate, cinnamon? and coriander. An pervasive cocoa and chocolate flavour throughout. The finish has mildly astringent bitterness and a nice sourness that balances well with the richness of the cocoa and malts.

On tap @ 10 East - Jolly Pumpkin beers used to be on the top of my "must get" list, but many of them have that similar house yeast flavor/funk that gets in the way. This was a pretty decent beer, oaky and barnyard aroma and flavors dominate. Watery. Reminds me in some ways of a Petrus ale.

2011 bottle from the shelf at pivni rozmanitost in prague, funny what can turn up there. anyways light brown, hazy and flat, no surprise given its vintage; aroma of apple vinegar, woody sourness; very little of the original beer showing, save for a hint of cocoa powder; pretty tart but made more sense by the end of the glass

On tap at Perennial. It poured a hazy brown color with a beige head. The aroma was of cocoa, spices, some brett, oak and a hint of wine. The taste was of more wine, spices, brett, cocoa, some moderate sweetness with a semi-dry finish. Very nice.
