mullet (763), Melbourne, Australia Jul 25, 2007 The bottles from this brewery are fantastic. Beer looks pretty good too - a lovely red with light haze and decent head. Again there’s a stark aroma of apple cores and pepper with sultanas, cloves, cherries, chocolate and spices like cinnamon and anise. The house style which really ruined La Roja for me works a lot better in this beer, but I still don’t love it. There’s a vague hint of the Rodenbach’s about it... but it’s nowhere near that good. In the mouth it’s dry, tart and grainy with chocolaty malt and noticeable roastiness and the associated astringency. The malt character is actually quite rich whilst the beer is extremely dry, which actually works well. But there are weird harsh phenols, rotting fruit character and an astringent woodiness to it too. The weird fermentation stuff actually works a lot better in this one, but it doesn’t necessarily make it good. The tartness is the most enjoyable aspect, but there’s too much other stuff clanging around for me to really like it. That said, it was interesting - if not that enjoyable - to drink. Many thanks (again) to Linc.
slimchill (616), Austin, Texas, USA Aug 19, 2008 Bottle. Brown-gold pour with a big white head. Cloudy and leaving amazing lacing. Pungent sharp sourness with cinnamon behind it. Opens with cinnamon into big barnyard-earthy funk. Finishes with deep bitter dark chocolate. Full-bodied and highly drinkable. The chocolate in the finish is a perfect contrast to the sourness. Masterfully-balanced like so many JP offerings. bb (2069), Martinez, California, USA Aug 16, 2008 Bottle. Batch 253. Copper beer with a tan head. Cocoa, caramel, cinnamon/spice aroma with light citrus and light tartness. Tart, light citrus flavor with caramel turning to spice, malt, and some light stone fruit. Medium body. Spice, cinnamon and nutmeg linger with malt and tartness. Theis (2018), Frederiksberg, Denmark Aug 7, 2008 Bottle (Thanks Puzzl) at Sune’s sommerhus. Murkey red/brown - offwhite head. Red berries, fruity, spicy, orange, light cinnamon, cherry, dry cocoa, light soapy, light oud bruin - caracters. Nice complexity. bager (2027), Copenhagen N, Denmark Jul 28, 2008 Bottled. Hazy and amber coloured with a rather large white head. Quite malty with notes of orangepeel, cloves, cinnamon, cocoa, cherry, nuts and wood. Ok balanced and quite complex - maybe even a little confusing.
