3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: NOV 26, 2013 Bottle: 2010, three years aged... thanks, Mike! Very deep mahogany body, completely opaque at the center with a creamy, beige & grey-ish head that has nice staying power. Aroma has notes of oak, sour cherries, very mild cinnamon, light apple & lemon, with a finishing touch of lacto sourness & a very mild touch of cotton funk. Perhaps the least "funky" JP brew, but still a nice tart presence. Taste has some wet, floral leaves & grass with a heavy bit of oak & lactic sourness. Very, very light cinnamon & potpourri spice in the finish as the sour fades out. Hops & weedy character grows in the aftertaste with a scraping dry finish.

Bottle. Murky dark amber. Stinky sour yeast smell. Taste is nicely tart and well balanced. Another great sour from jolly pumpkin.

It’s a sour so it has to he pretty tasty for me to get past the sour. This one does a pretty good job in that respect but falls a bit short of really good. I give it an 80.

Oak barrel aging comes through in aroma. Dark brown ale. Sour mash with oak notes. Decent. Not too sour.

A: Deep Mahogany/Brownish Hue, Passes Very Little Light, Foamy Off White Head, Great Lacing
S: Funky, Black Pepper, Black Bread
T: Funky, Black Cherry, Currants
M: Great Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Sour, Mildly Bitter
Overall, the style of beer doesnt fit this beer well as a BSDA, but more of a funky sour. I didn’t get much of the oak flavor from the barrels either but a an overall solid dark fruit, sour ale.

A good winter beer. A definite sipper that really drinks nice and easy. As for me another solid beer from Jolly Pumpkin.

Batch 1198, 9/18/12. Chose to crack this one on it’s anniversary. Sadly, it has an overpowering medicinal off-flavor. Very recognizable chlorophenols. There’s a little bit of oak in the finish and just a bit of the tart fruit others described. Unfortunately, it is undrinkable. Others on Untappd report possible infection. If you’ve got a bottle from this batch, might as well open it now and see if you dodge the bullet.
