Pours brown with good amount of carb. Bottled on 11/2010, enjoyed 2/13. Taste is tart, slight alcohol, sour cherries, raisin, plum. Light body but good mouthfeel. Nice winter ale.

BlackIPA (747) - Rochester, New York, USA - FEB 8, 2013
Pours a cloudy amber with just a tiny off white head. Aroma of funky oak, mellow dark fruit, a touch of yeast, some genital warts. Amazing. Taste is slightly sour, dry, with a hint of salty brine. Quite tart, but this thing has a boatload of funk to back it up. Funkytown. Shit, I’m already white boy wasted. Almost. Great beer.

Fucking great! It’s tart, has a touch of sour cherry in the nose, and a little barnyard on the palette. Man, score!

Bottle. Pours a near-black color with a moderate white head. Nose is just a tad sweet with a bit of malts there. Taste is much the same with the sweetness dominating.

Bottle from Matt / Nekrobarr (non on ratebeer). Sampled on January 27, 2013. Bottle marked Blend 13, bottled 11-14-2012.
Murky brown color, tan head. MAinly acidic scent. Acidic, tart taste, also apples. Bitter aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, low bitterness.

The cherries give it tart taste but it's subtle. It's not as sour as a true sour beer. It's a refreshing beer to drink. This beer is very drinkable, the 9% ABV is very well hidden. Dry finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a medium brown with a lively three finger eggshell head. On the nose there is some wet wood, tart fruit, cherry, apple cider and light warm spice. The palate has a great balance between sweet tart fruit and spiced warm malt background. Great rustic funk dries out nicely on the finish.

Bottled. Ruby beer, huge head. Lambic-like funky nose has sour cherries, red currants, acidic grapes and dry oak. Some very dark fruitines or sugar on the background. Very sour and dry aroma is heavy on lactic acid and dry oakiness. There’s only a hint of sweeter, fermented fruitiness. Lacks some balancing matiness, especially in the finish. High carbonation highlights thinnes. Hides alcohol surprisingly well. Interesting, yet slightly unbalanced.

Pours a rich brown color with cherry highlights. Weak-ish aroma of funky spices. Mild-to-moderate sour notes at first, but finishes spicy and bitter. Goes down very easily for 9% abv. A solid winter brew. I feel like Jolly Pumpkin’s voice isn’t for everyone, but I certainly enjoy it.

If you like holiday spice beers and the occasional fizzer (e.g. Unibroue’s style, humming with carbonation), then you’ll liked this one. It’s a dark rose color, bubble action inside, and a negligible amount of foam and lacing. The smell is warm cider. The taste is spice (cinnamon, nutmeg) on fruit (mellowed oranges and apricots). The mouthfeel is light, fizzed, not-creamy (what would that be called, without calling it watery?) and easily drinkable. Overall, an excellent and deliriously consumable beverage that I would happily have more of, were it not so geographically and chronologically hard to come by.
