2012) (963-080114)

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/20/2011. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of strawberry, cherry, green apple, raisin, orange zest, caramel, toast, oak, clove, nutmeg, pepper, hay, grass, herbal, light funk, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, oak, and spice notes; with good strength. Taste of strawberry, tart cherry, green apple, orange zest, raisin, caramel, toast, nutmeg, clove, oak, pepper, hay, grass, light funk, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Light fruity tartness/spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of strawberry, cherry, green apple, orange zest, raisin, caramel, toast, nutmeg, clove, pepper, hay, grass, herbal, light funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, oak, and spice flavors; with a nice balance of fruit/spiciness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Belgian dark ale. All around nice balance and complexity of yeast, oak, and spice flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Pours brown with tan head. Very fizzy. Smells sour, bready. Has a bit of a flat/ boring body, taste a touch of sourness, brett funk...not too impressed.

This poured a ruby red color with a beige head. Aroma was of light funk, vinegar, oak, and cherries. Flavor was cherries and funk and oak. Really nice stuff, but not really an xmas beer.

Tap at Iron Abbey. Dark red/brown with tan head. Sweet/sour nose. Tartness is prominent in flavor. Early in the glass that’s all I taste. Oak comes through as does the alcohol. Bret sourness and dryness dominates Palate is thinner and carbonation low. This had some loose ends but still good.

Black colored pour. Big light tan head. Plenty of lacing. Nice typical JP aroma of bacteria and malt. Some spices. Nice tart chocolate and coffee. Some cherry and molasses. Great beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

P: Murky dark brown mahogany with yeast swirls. Started to gush once opened and delivers a massive blubbery looking khaki head that giggles like a bowl full of jelly. Great retention with micro bubble clingers. S: Hickory smoke, nutmeg, toasted malts and chocolate almond bark. Sweet and spicy phenolic aroma. T/M: Holiday spices, ginseng, waxy apple peels, bitter cranberries and booze. The signature Jolly Pumpkin base with a spiced one dimensional profile. Loads of spice flood the palate and drown out the other flavors. Carbonation is a tad too aggressive and the feel is full and chunky not smooth. Finish is dry with a slight dusting of cocoa powder over bitter fruit peel. O: This has to be my least favorite of the Jolly Pumpkin line up. I was excited to see the holiday special brew but It was not the present i was expecting. Not a terrible creation but seems messy and unrefined. Must have been made by south pole elves...Can’t expect everything to shine like the northern star. Cheers!

Draft at Moriartys. Cloudy dark brown pour. Some off-white foam up top. Sour bite jumps out at first sip. Subtler dark malty flavors underneath. Maybe too subtle. The malt flavors feel very watered down, despite an otherwise reasonably high ABV. Feels like a thin Double Bock with a sharp Brett spike. Not bad, but not complex at all. Bit disappointed as I love Jolly Pumpkin so much. Though, knowing JP, there can be significant variation between kegs (as well as within a keg) so I will definitely try again. Not bad as it is though.

Dark brown, tanned head. Smells of caramel, dark fruits, funk and tart berries. Moderate sweet, quite fruity, some nice acids, funky, dry from the brett. Moderate bitter finish. As always nice delivered from Jolly Pumpkin

BottlePours a dark mahogany color. Aroma of Raisins and funk. The oak definitely comes through in the taste. Other than that I’m not picking up much more than tart and funk. Not a bad beer but not one I would drink again.
