bottle 2007 blend 2 - Pours murky brown with a big, foamy head. The aroma is of yeast, some light fruitiness, and sour funk. The flavor is tart and malty with some spices apparent. The oak is very mild. The palate is lively and the finish somewhat dry. It’s different, quite drinkable, but not my favorite.

2007 Vintage Blend 1. Aroma has a strong skunk scent to with some fruit in the back. Why the hell did they put this in a green bottle. Color is a solid orange brown with good carbonation and a thick head. Taste is tart and tangy. Starting with a medium body it goes down fizzy. Finish comes in with a fruit cider tartness with a faint oak flavor. After taste is a sour twang. Its a bit funky but at least there’s no skunk in the taste.

Tap at Spuyten Duyvil: Nice looking pour of muddy burgundy topped by a light tan ring. Can’t see through it at all. Light brett notes in the nose. Some cherry pit, tart raspberry and lemon-rind. Mouthfeel is lacking; has a dull texture. Flavor has a refreshing tartness, some acidic raspberry hints and funky cork notes. The brett is evident, but it’s lacking something to complete the flavor scale. Maybe it needs time to get more funky/complex? Not bad though.

750 ml bottle purchased at the incomparable Argonaut in Denver, Colorado. 2007 Vintage Blend 1. Pour is orange brown with an out of control thick tan head made up of very fine carbonation bubbles. Settles eventually into a rocky two inch affair. Aroma of metallic woodiness. Dirt and vegetable spiciness are also on offer. The JP yeast is there too, but very much in the backseat. Interesting nose, quite a bit going on. Taste is a nice sour sharpness initially then transfers to something resembling peanut butter. Peanut butter? Yes, peanut butter. This fades some as it warms. The finish re-introduces the dirt. Not real sure where they were going with this one, hope other blends were better.

4/18/08, 2007 vintage Blend Horizontal 1-5. These all look almost exactly alike (except 1, which I will address in due time). But 2 - 4: Raisin colored brown red with a foamy beige head that laces down in fluffy streaks. So that part was easy, no one to the small nuances between each blend.

Blend 1. Pour is a similar raisin-brown-red by a little more murky colored with a head that fades to a filmy look. I actually enjoy this nose the best of all of them. More fruity. Oak Cherries, grapefruit, barnyard, and soapy. The grain and hay isn’t as pronounced in this one. Soapy/dirty flavors (oxymoron?) Barnyard, oak, faded hops, dirt, a bad earthy flavor. Finish is so dirty with with old hops. I don’t know what happened here, but this isn’t to enjoyable. This by far scored the lowest. I don’t think anyone finished their glass of this blend. 8/3/5/3/13 = 2.9

Blend 2. Lots of grain/hay in the nose. The funky notes have a more sour edge to them. the oak is less pronounced, but balanced well. Flavors are tart, hay, with dry fruit. Cherries, oak, green grapes, hay. Fruity, but very dry and clean. This one was my favorite. 7/4/8/4/15 = 3.8

Blend 3. Grain/hay sour notes in the nose. The yeast spices were more pronounced. Fruity, sweet, and refreshing flavors: cherries, grain, oak, citrus, and grapes. These become sour and acidic in the finish. But they work well together. 7/4/74/15 = 3.7

Blend 4. More of the hay/grain sour notes in the nose with yeast, and dirty/earthy hops. This one is more spritzy than the others, which I find slightly annoying. Cherries, oak, grapes, acidic and funky with the driest finish of any of the blends. 7/4/7/3/15 = 3.6

Blend 5. Wet grains/hay in the nose, oak with yeast spices and sour notes. Sour barnyard flavors. Oak, grapes, dried fruits, sweet with a dry finish. 7/4/7/3/14 = 3.5

So I guess my order would be Blends 2, 3, 4, 5, then 1. I think its safe to give the recorded score as a 3.7, not factoring in the blend 1 as my average score. A good beer, with some interesting differences between each one.

Thanks to pantanap (secret santa) for this beer. Pours a rich murky brown with large head. Funk nose with some fig and sour apples. Taste is tart and funky with some peppery spices, wet wood and vanilla. Another good bottle from JP.

Dark brown pour, somewhat funky tart aroma. A fairly complex brew, with some malty sweetness and sour balance, not much in the hop department. Mouth feel is a bit too watery to hold the flavor profile up. Not bad but I won’t be looking around for another bottle.
