2007 bottle, blend 5. Pours dark brown with fiery orange edges. Aroma bursts forth, first a dry oaky sourness, then a montage of tropical fruits, especially coconut, sour apples. Flavor has an initial burst of tartness, pretty much typical JP oak and dryness, then of course nice layers of fruit underneath. Coconut and almond shine through very pleasantly. A slight vinegar-infused apple is present. There’s more tropical fruits I can’t quite put down. Kind of spicy in the finish. This has some wonderful elements, especially the almonds and coconut juice. Some of the tartness at the finish is not as refined as I would like. Overall, pretty awesome.

Blend 3, 2007 Bottle (1 yr old) from BrotherGrendel at PP bottle shop. I’m kind of surprized I haven’t tried this yet. Lots of brett bruxenellis in the aroma. Nice level of sourness. Classic Brett aroma. Some illusion of cherry sweetness. Dry and sweet at the same time if that is possible. I would recharacterize the style as sour ale, if it were me entering the beer. I don’t get any of the Belgian yeast characteristics, such as banana and clove. Good beer.

Bottle (Blend 1, 2007). Thanks, NachlamSie! Pours translucent chestnut brown with a big beige head. Aroma is very tart, very appley and vinegary, with funky barnyard yeast. I expect a total sourfest, but while the tart character is present and plentiful, lots of sweet notes and spices balance it very well. A nice carbonation level helps hide the alcohol. No way I would guess this to be 9%. Nice.

750 split with Muenster. Pours cloudy mahogany with a very tall tan head. The aroma is assertively sour. Lots of clean vinegar in the nose, borderline skunk, some barnyard, and a vinous backdrop. The mouthfeel is very lively with high carbonation. I keep expecting some oak sweetness, but never really get it. Beneath the sour cider vinegar flavor is a plethora of spices. A lot is going on in this beer. It goes from fruits to dark spices to an almost coffee bean flavor. This is not very sweet at all. The finish almost takes on some charred barrel character, but I can’t sort through everything that’s going on. This is a really complex, unique, and well crafted beer. I like it!

Hazy dark ruby in color with an big tan head great lacy as well. Aroma of dark caramel dark fruit, with an underlaying essence of sour green apple. Flavor is of caramel, raisins, plum, spice, typical Jolly Pumpkin funkiness that I enjoy. Finish is sour/tart long. Great beer and thankfully as of this review date I still have 5 bottles.

Bottle blend 4, 2007. Hazy garnet with a frothy light tan head. JP house funk/wood aroma with dry hay, lemon, and dark caramel. Frothy mouthfeel with a light to medium body. Good flavors of seered dark caramel, sour oak, and tart lemon; the oak blends nicely with the funk and alcohol. Has a dry yeasty oak finish. Good choice for a winter brew.
