Artisan Golden Ale. Ale aged in oak barrels. Barrel aged & bottle conditioned. Aged in large oak casks and refermented in the bottle. Oro de Calabaza is brewed in the Franco-Belgian tradition of special golden ales. Spicy and peppery with a gentle hop bouquet and the beguiling influence of wild yeast. Slightly cloudy solid golden pour. Quarter inch of white head dissipated quickly. Great aroma of sour berries and crisp barnyard funk, juicy green sour apples and pear, oak, bready yeast, nice overall vinegar-y cider aroma. Average carbonation, mouthfeel is slightly tart and tingly, crisp finish. Apple, pear, champagne yeast flavors with lemon zest and a bit of cork. Crisp lighter sour, hides ABV well.

Aroma is almost lambic-like mixed with a background of yeast and spices. The flavor is fruit, pale malts, sour/barrel aging notes and a somewhat champagne/dryish finish.

Bottle. Pours nice haze neon’s yellow with golden hint and small lasting white head. Aroma has tons of apples. The Girardin ones, both green and rip ones. Dry cider’ish. Wheat, funk, oak, slight barnyard. Taste starts sweet with red ripe apples over the tongue and turns tart with green apples. Leather, oak, spicy vanilla. Medium to full well carbonated mouth coating body. Slight alcohol as it warms in the glass, but well incorporated. Delicate and yet complex.

Bottle. Pours very yellow, light orange. Has a nose of very fresh green apples, fresh sourness and gives a little bit of a cider vibe. Funky wheaty notes as well. Sweet at first sip, dry at last. Like the nose, it has lots of apples on the tongue, fresh crisp hops giving it a slight grape, and yet no real bitterness. Good!

Bright cloudy gold pour, thin white head. Nose is red liquorice and funky yeast. Bittersweet. Middle is cherries, spice, and medium malt. Finish is crisp and slightly sour. The bottle I had seemed almost like a sour, so it was not quite what I was expecting.

Bottle. Had a bottle of the Noel De Calabaza on Thurday then coincidentally, this last night. Go Jolly Pumpkin. Pours a hazy, almost muddy Yellow with a White head. Aroma of sweet malt, sourish wheat and brett. Tastes quite ordinary if truth be told. Thoroughly delicious but not particularly memorable. I’d perhaps brought my expectations from the Noel the night before. A perfectly nice and quite refreshing brew.

75cl bottle. Pours clear golden with a small Brown head. Aroma is pretty sour with citrus and citrus peely sour-bitter notes. Leather, green apples, some sweeter orangy stuff, sweet apples. Taste has some more sour notes. Slight bitter hops and citrus peel. High carb, medium body. The alcohol is nowhere to be found! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle: Mucky shade of golden-yellow; translucent & topped with a soapy white head that leaves some respectable lacing on the glass. Critter filled aroma with tons of funk, spice, & balanced tartness. Dry apple skins, tart pears, white pepper, flowers, herbaceous hops, wet oak, musty cheesecloth, clove, orange zest, & damp hay. Nice array of aromas, balanced so seemingly well. This beer could be described as a slightly tart Belgian strong pale ale with extra spices added. Lots of white peppery & hoppy spices outline a somewhat fruity & estery centerpiece complete with pear, apple, hints of lemon, & moderate orange zest. Notes of torrid oak, banana-like esters, & a thick, bready yeast body provide a solid backbone for everything else to lean upon. Tons of that signature JP funk in the back-end, lasting long into the aftertaste. Cheesey, musty, corky, horsey funk & drying oak. Leaves your palate moisture free. Great beer, one of my favorites from Jolly Pumpkin.
