Artisan Golden Ale. Ale aged in oak barrels. Barrel aged & bottle conditioned. Aged in large oak casks and refermented in the bottle. Oro de Calabaza is brewed in the Franco-Belgian tradition of special golden ales. Spicy and peppery with a gentle hop bouquet and the beguiling influence of wild yeast. 25 oz bottle, poured into a tulip glass at ~40 degrees F. Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy burnished straw golden color, and forms a thick white head with good retention. Plenty of carbonation is visible, streaming through the beer. Lacing is off the chain, so to speak. Smell: Musty wheat, old books, melon (cantaloupe and honeydew), and pear leap out of the glass, bringing along faint hints of white pepper. Taste: Fascinating. The taste profile opens with funky white pepper, as if the peppercorns had been dampened and encouraged to grow some tiny spots of mold ere being ground. The fruits from the aroma come through as the beer moves along the palate, always overlaid with that musty pepper, and supported by an undertone of old, old wood and paper. As it finishes, the fruit essence shifts to tones of tart white grape and very faint citrus, with a vaguely bitter, dry aftertaste not unlike a dry white wine. Mouthfeel: Lively and nigh medium in body, with a somewhat watery finish. Overall: Thus far, the only thing I’ve had with the Jolly Pumpkin name on it that I have not liked was a collaboration beer with Anchorage. They do bieres de garde well. This one isn’t quite their Fuego del Otono to me, but it’s also a repeater.

Old rating. Great beers cloudy gold. Light biscuit body but plenty of citrus, melon, tart, and funk, finishes slightly dry, but still has a pleasant sour taste, low carbonation but still light bodied.

Bottle shared at a sour tasting at our place. Cloudy blond with a white head. Citrus and funk and some melon at first. Fruity and refreshing aroma. Stale dunk-like taste that’s very pungent. No carbonation, medium body, pungent aftertaste and a little woodsy.

Bottle sample at a sour tasting at kerenmk’s place. Thanks kerenmk. Clear yellow-golden with a white head. Woody aroma, funky, kinda spicy, with some fruitiness, pretty citric. Yeasty flavor, dry, kinda funky, woody, with earth, spice, and some bitterness. Medium-bodied, lively carbonation. Nice stuff.

Cloudy yellow-beige colour with a thick but loose head. The aroma is orvallish, very herbal and dusty with assertive hopping and a subtle lemony note. Palate is spicy, tart, with juicy lemon and a whack of peppery, coriandery notes. The fnish is tart and refreshing, with an austere hop dryness. Spice reigns. Complex barrel goodness. Impressive.

Hazy golden body with a small white head. The aroma has some strong brett funk, lactic acid, green apple, oak, chardonnay, peppery alcohol, subtle fruit esters, and a hint of bready malt. The flavor is more wine like, retains some of the apple character, and finishes very dry, which seems to mute some of the sourness. Malt comes through a little more as it warms, as does some oak, and a touch of alcohol. Nice balance of sweet, sour, oak, funk and golden ale.

750 ML bottle 2013 vintage Straw yellow color, gets more hazy as more gets poured. Good bright white head. Falls to a thick collar. Spotty lacing. Nose is zesty lemon, orange, chardonnay, oak, and a mix of sea salt, gym socks, and vinegar. Taste is oak, chardonnay, coriander, orange peel, lemon peel, and spices. Brett shows up nicely. Medium bodied, subtle carbonation. ABV is more evident in the feel and finish. Far more Belgian strong ale in the mouth. Just a tad bit of sourness in the end. Damne good stuff with age

Bottle. Moderate to heavylight bread, grain and hay for the malt, moderate herbs and grass for the hops, moderate to heavy barnyard and musty for the yeast, with wood and ginger in the background. Head is huge, frothy/fizzy, white with fair lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is murky medium yellow. Flavor starts moderately to heavily acidic, then finishes moderately acidic. Palate is medium, between dry and watery, and has a fizzy carbonation. Pretty much one faceted in flavor out of it, but this Belgian Strong Ale has enough bold and diverse aromas to cover for it.
