COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sour, barrel-aged version of the beer by the same name. Brewed in collaboration with Maui brewing.

Yes, Michigan and Hawaii are connected. It should be obvious to you now, as you hold this beer, and read this label. John and I designed this beer with two noble fruits from two noble states, Michigan & Hawaii. Cherries and liliko’i. Starting to see the connection? I feel it. So does John. 4391 miles may separate our breweries, but no our thirst for the exquisite. Hipa! -Ron

Working with Ron is something I’ve always want to do since I had my first Jolly Pumpkin beer. Years later, it’s a reality. Being involved on this project was an honor and a privilege. Mahalo to my MBC crew and to you, fans of craft beer! -John

A cloudy orange pour with pinkish/reddish intonations is quickly left foamless. Juicy, attractive nose with plenty of phenolic wildness, spicy, almost leathery, flowery, very fruity. Cranberries and sour cherry notes are prominent and feeling rather green, not overly ripe and blending well with the oak’s own tannins. I did not like it so much after the first few sips, but going through the 750 ml, I started appreciating its relative drinkability for a wild beer whose flavor profile is fairly impactful. The finish is long, dry and fruity, tasty yet no exagerated, maintaining a sense of composure and humility. It is good stuff, if not particularly complex, but considering the 18$ price tag on my 750 ml, I’m not sure I’d buy again.

Bottle @ Hall Toll, Stavanger. Hazy dark orange body, big white head. Aroma is balsamico, biscuits, vanilla, wood and hints of caramel in the back. Taste is red berries, wood, mineral salts, balsamico and hints of grains. Medium body and carbonation. Classic JP, and very nice to boot.

Bottle, with a little sticker on it denoting "batch 1". Hazy red-tinted amber, beige head. Aroma is sour with sweet malty and cherry notes. The palate delivers sour cherries, sweet brown malt, yoghurty lactic notes, and a beautiful rounded oaky character that keeps this sour beer super smooth into the finish. Crazy drinkable, complex-- awesome! This is so much better than their Hawaiian partner’s rendition.

Pours a murky brown with a rose tinge. Aroma of tart cherries and barnyard funk. Tastes of sour cherries, oak, Dexter funk, some sweetness and light earthy tones. Very enjoyable. Finishes crisp but not overly tart. Very well done.

Pours reddish/pink and cloudy. Sulphur (farts) on the nose and a huge dollop of cherries. While you get a sourness straight away there is also a sweetness in the background of unripe fruit. Sour, tart and funky. I’ve never eaten lilikoi before but if is just a type of passion fruit i want more. Thanks to Sean barman The Vintage, Leith.

Bottle: Poured a reddish color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of tart fruit with cherries notes and light funky notes. Taste is also dominated by tart cherry notes with some tart and sour notes with some light funky yeast notes in the finish. Body is about average with good carbonation. Nice sour with oak, cherry and tart notes mixing well together.

750ml bottle (blend 6) in a tulip. Pours deep ruby/amber with a lacy, cream-colored head. Aroma of sourness/tartness, some cherries and other fruits?, pale and caramel malts, light oak and some light funk. Flavor the same with a nice blend of the fruits and sour notes. Average texture. A really good beer.

FROM NOTES: August 9, ’12 Poured on draft at The Trappist into a Trappist glass. A: Acidic, hints of berries, cherries, citric, a little vinous character, but had vinegar undertones and good funky oaky barnyard notes. A: Pours a bronze, slightly hazy amber with a fizzy whitish head that dies away to a thin ring of lace within seconds. T: Tart, yet juicy with a strong passion fruit flavor. Light caramel malt with a bit of toast, a little lemon, and just a hint of oak. P: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. O: I do not like sours, but of the myriad that I’ve tried, this was the best. One pint was plenty for a life-time, but again, the best sour I’ve had to date. Serving: draft.
