Sour, barrel-aged version of the beer by the same name. Brewed in collaboration with Maui brewing.

Yes, Michigan and Hawaii are connected. It should be obvious to you now, as you hold this beer, and read this label. John and I designed this beer with two noble fruits from two noble states, Michigan & Hawaii. Cherries and liliko’i. Starting to see the connection? I feel it. So does John. 4391 miles may separate our breweries, but no our thirst for the exquisite. Hipa! -Ron

Working with Ron is something I’ve always want to do since I had my first Jolly Pumpkin beer. Years later, it’s a reality. Being involved on this project was an honor and a privilege. Mahalo to my MBC crew and to you, fans of craft beer! -John

750 ml bottle served in a Duvel green tulip. Blend # 5, bottled on 5-09-2012. A: Pours a burnt orange color with a yellowish head forming the pour. It has some nice body to it as it recedes to a thick cap and collar. Nice sheets of lace are left down the sides of the glass. S: Some light cherry tartness with some yeasty sweetness to it. Sweet fruit juice is also present in the nose. Definitely missing some lacto sourness in the nose. A touch of oak is present on the nose as well. T: Sweet fruit juice, maybe some blueberry and cherry, with a very subtle tart note. Some light lemon grass with a odd celery note to it. Oak tannins with some vanilla sweetness on the finish with a pale malt body. M: Medium to light bodied with a prickly carbonation level. Clean, semi-drying finish. O: This was entirely disappointing. The beer itself wasn’t bad, but it’s very poor representation of the style. No biting sourness and very little tartness in the taste as well. Not worth the price. Interesting color, reddish with an amber hue. Two fingers of off white head that settles nicely. Aroma shows cranberry and raspberry with wild notes and some wood. Very nice, bright and tannic with some acidity and fruity notes. Light bodied and dry.

Blend 1, bottled 04-26-2012 Pours a dark copper/ruby red color with burnt orange edges when held to a light. Completely still with no head or lace. Musty aroma with a nice blend of barrel, earthy funk, vinous fruit and subtle vinegar. At first the oak and funky bugs dominate but as it warms the cherry juice and other dark fruit notes come to the forefront. Subtle acetone but more of a vinegar presence than solvent. Thinner bodied than expected with soft carbonation but not as still as it looks. Slight herbal/medicinal presence with strong cherry juice and dark berry flavor. The funky yeast and barrel presence are very subtle, taking a back seat to the sweet vinous fruit notes. Not very sour or funky with a subtle acetic quality in the finish. Kind of watered down with low carbonation and a one dimensional flavor profile making this collaboration beer pretty boring. Disappointing offering from Jolly Pumpkin.

December 16th, 2013 - Jolly Pumpkin and Maui Brewing must have put in some serious air miles to get this done, but the product is a fine sassy potion, cramming essence of cranberry into every milliliter. Enjoyed at home, I popped the top to find the cranberry scent quickly unfurling itself like a genie, colonizing the room and settling in for the whole bottle’s drinking time. It’s a sour scent with tons of raspberry and cherry, with a tang (distinct from the sour) but it is largely defined by its own acerbic quality. The taste leads with more of the tang, behind which a collection of fruit flavors gather - pomegranate, cranberry and tangerine. It’s not too sweet, instead stuffed with cranberries. That bitter-acidic sweetness doesn’t last long either, blooming then quickly wilting, leaving the beer demanding another sip. It’s not too bright, just acidic, with each intake screwing up the face and lips a bit. But in a good way. A human way.

Blend 4. The pour is a muted ruby color. The aroma is vinegar and flowers. The taste is sour and a little bland. Don't get much oak from it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Darker amber, off-white head. Tart berries and cherry vibes on the nose at first. Funkyness and vinegar notes are present too. Quite nice actually. Lemons, some straw and dry sour berries in taste. Tart and funky finish. No need for further rant here, it’s just simply good and delicious brew. Time to enjoy the rest of the bottle.

750 ml bottle. Deep golden body with a small, dense off-white head. Quite fresh and fruity aroma with some malt and some funkiness. Flavor is both sweet and sour with mild malt, citric fruit, some acidity and funk. Fine body and aftertaste. Another nice and well balanced creature from JP.
