Five beer enthusiasts with a common passion for historic brewing came together to create this distinct Polish beer style in the most authentic way we can think of after the brewery in Grodzisk Wielkopolski closed in 1993. It is brewed by Jopen and Monarchy of Musselland together with the beer writers Ron Pattinson and Evan Rail. We use 100% oak-smoked wheat malt, have the exact same gravity of 7.7 degrees Plato, employed classic Lublin hops and fermented with the original yeast. As the town once and again today belongs to Poland, but in the meantime was part of Prussia, there are two different names for the style: Grodziskie and Grätzer. Our research found that brewers also formerly used willow bark in brewing which we thought was an interesting variation. That is why we are offering two different takes on the style: a classic version bearing the name "Grätzer"and a willow bark version called "Grodziskie".

Very intersting new beer, as close to the original style as possible. Easy going beer with a great taste, luckily low in alcohol. Breadish, soft, not too smoky, balanced. I really enjoyed this. Not easy to distinguish from the Grodziskie (samerecipe with willow-bark added) however.

Bottle at Pizzeria Paradiso, Dupont Circle. Aroma - whrat, touch of funk, salt, yeast, hints of smoke. Taste - wheat, soft hops, touch of salt and finishes with a touch of funk and a touch of smoke. Really soft on palate. Leaves a ton of lacing on glass.

On tap @ Borefts 2013. A kinda blurry deep dark golden almost a bit orange and it has a medium sized bubbly white top. Smells mildly sweet with some honey and sweet biscuits blended with a really nice hop combo and wheat. Smells a bit like a wit to be honest. Did not expect it to smell as nice as thist. The taste is quite whitish also. Dry, almost astringent in the mouth, it has a soft light oily mouthfeel and a prickling average carbonation level. I really like the flavor on this. Lots of wheat sweetness, if I was to guess this would be a mild wit. Knowing that it’s not I’m a bit confused, but still pleased. 27.09.2013

Bottle at the Jopenkerk. Poured a hazy light amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is big smoky malt, light vinous. The flavour is grainy dry neutral veggie with a big yeast, doughy, light malt palate and a cheesy yeast finish and that’s what she said too :-) Medium bodied with soft carbonation. A really unusual beer and I’m so pleased I got to taste it! I can’t say I’ve ever tasted anything quite like it before.

On tap at Mr Dunderbaks. Gold pour, big white head. Smells like socks and garbage. Tastes like smoke and malt. Not for me. 5.2

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is medium yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (herbs), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with light notes of smoke, lemon zest, hints of plastic and diacetyl. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter, slightly unclean. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Aromatically rather shy, and not as clean as it should be, but it could be a very fun beer in more skilled hands...I like the concept, a smoked low-ABV wheat beer. But alas, there’s not much smoke, not much of any of the aromatic components really. And again, the light plastic/butter notes are off-putting. As is the ridiculous price ($6 for 11oz of a 4% beer is just plain stupid), so I’m actually kinda glad it’s only mediocre.
