COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Five beer enthusiasts with a common passion for historic brewing came together to create this distinct Polish beer style in the most authentic way we can think of after the brewery in Grodzisk Wielkopolski closed in 1993. It is brewed by Jopen and Monarchy of Musselland together with the beer writers Ron Pattinson and Evan Rail. We use 100% oak-smoked wheat malt, have the exact same gravity of 7.7 degrees Plato, employed classic Lublin hops and fermented with the original yeast. As the town once and again today belongs to Poland, but in the meantime was part of Prussia, there are two different names for the style: Grodziskie and Grätzer. Our research found that brewers also formerly used willow bark in brewing which we thought was an interesting variation. That is why we are offering two different takes on the style: a classic version bearing the name "Grätzer"and a willow bark version called "Grodziskie".

Very intersting new beer, as close to the original style as possible. Easy going beer with a great taste, luckily low in alcohol. Breadish, soft, not too smoky, balanced. I really enjoyed this. Not easy to distinguish from the Grodziskie (samerecipe with willow-bark added) however.

[ As Jopen / The Monarchy Vereinigte Historische Bierfanatiker Grätzer ].
Unclear medium orange yellow color with a small, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is light to moderate malty, pale malt, smoke, light caramel. Flavour is moderate sweet with a average duration, mint - minerals ! smoked, pale malt. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. [20130928]

Bottle @ Greg’s dump. Pours a fairly clear golden appearance with a white head. Some paper / wood smoke, lemon, slight metal, twangy aroma. Medium bodied. Fairly tart and spicy. Big woody smoke. Ehhh OK.

Opaque hay-orange colour with a weak head and gentle carbonation. Smell is smoke and wood, leather and meat, with subtle hints of fruit (dried peaches) and sourness. Salty and spicy. Taste is also smokey but much more subtly. Leather and wood subtle too, dominated by a fizzy warmness and a full-bodied feel. Dry meaty finish. There’s a sweet sourness in there on the edge between nasty and nice - interesting.

Bottle (330 ml). Courtesy of JulienHuxley, thanks! Murky yellow with a small white head and little lacing. Aroma is smokey with wheat, bread and lemon. Taste is also smokey with a touch of wheat acidity, lemony notes, bread and an eucalyptus finish. Light to medium body. Moderate carbonation. Tasty and quite drinkable. Very interesting beer.

O,33l fles gedeeld met Nikos. Mooi amberkleurig bier met wat bezinksel. Aangenaam aroma en smaak met een wat hop, gist en ook duidelijk de rook. Body is medium.

Second grodziskie I’ve had in a few days, and forever for that matter. Smoked wheat - interesting, though not wonderful. Smoke buries a lot of the softer elements of this style. Pours cloudy blonde with ok head and lacing. Light smokey bitter finish. Some sweetness. Bread yeast all but eclipsed by smoke even though the smoke aroma is light. Tap at Pizza Paradiso Dupont.

Bottle from Belmont Station, Portland. Pours a slightly cloudy orange-amber, decent amount of white head. Aroma slight smoke, corn liquor, hot dogs, coriander. Body very lively, finish oaky and increasingly smoky in a very pleasant way. I don’t know of this is true to style, but a well-balanced finish makes up for a slightly off-putting nose.
