COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

30cl bottle, Bier&Co Rotterdam, NL sampler. - typical gruut/gruit wit, rather flat on taste and with cooking&baking spices supplanting hop bitterness. Lactic yellow, thin palate. Still drinkable, but not a joy to down.
If this is brewed after an age-old Harlem recipe, why has it been brewed in commission by Van Steenberghe and then Huyghe, both two very lacklustre Flemish contractor breweries from the wider Gent area not very renowned for theirs wits (eh), when Gent already has its own true-to-the-medieval style Gruut brewery? Still minimally more characteristic than Huyghe’s own Blanche des Neiges.

worldbeertaste (1119) - Lancashire, ENGLAND - APR 29, 2013
Cloudy gold with yeast floaters and a foamy, nice hugs the glass lacy, lasting white head. The smell is malty with lots of spices like coriander mixed with the hoppy citrus and flowery as well as yeast. Malt, herbal and flowers. The body is medium oily with soft carbonation. Tastes of sweet wheat with some light citrus and yeast and a thin finish. Easy to drink and light. A good session beer.

Bottle at the Brouwcafe, Scheveningen. Poured a cloudy amber with a thin white frothy head. The aroma is of banana leading to a fruity, yeasty, very slightly malty flavour with some citrus notes on the palate.

300 ml bottle, poured into a tumbler glass. ABV 5%. One finger of white head, with low retention but it never disappeared comnpletely, instead some foam traces remained on the beer’s surface. Pale yellow colour on the body, slighty hazy. Aroma is faint, mostly of wheat and then even fainter of the gruit mix. Taste is great, wheat, gale, I think I am getting some green tea, some honey too. Good balanced sweetness/bitterness. Medium thin body, carbonation slighty above average. Nice witbier, the gruit herbs giving it an interesting twist.

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ Mitra. Pale cloudy yellow with a white head. Spicy yeasty aroma. I didn’t like the overall taste of the Adriaan but I’M not a big Belgian White fan so I’m biased.

Very light yellow, slightly hazy beer with small white head. Taste and aroma are not impressive, it´s rather tastless. Bit refreshing, as a witbier should be, but there are a lot more tastier witbiers. Low body, carbo is nice.
