COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

a drain pour. not sure if i got an old bottle or what (very good possibility). it was bland, watery and waaaay too sweet. i got a tiny bit of spice, some rose and lavender like notes, and rock candy sugars. finished thin and again sweet. ugh.

UPDATED: AUG 23, 2011 The Jopenchurch in Haarlem doesn’t serve this as well as they bottle it (although the cozy church setting makes up for that) but it’s a special beer with a very strong aroma.

I got this for a try at a very old style of beer. I was not disappointed for what it is but glad that things have progressed. It is strange to have a beer with no hops and even the malt seems thin but this is decently drinkable. If i lived 500 years ago i would be alright to kick back a few. More herb and spice like than i thought but it doesn’t fill the palate like hops. An interesting history lesson but certainly not for everyone.

Bottle 30cl. More or less typical Belgium-style Witbeer, has although its own character. Nice!

[3/7/11] Bottle at Arendsnest in Amsterdam. Hazy pale golden. Aroma of fruits, some bready notes and some spiciness. Sweetish flavor with wheat fruitiness and light spiciness in the finish. Light-bodied.

Pours a cloudy, murky, yellowish color. Much like a wit, but cloudier. Small white head with a little lacing. Spicy. Mostly peppery with a clove like aroma. Some flowery aroma as well. Sweet, but not overly. Carbonic bite. A little bit of lemon. Banana. Pepper. Not bad. Flowery smell comes through in the tastes just enough to notice it. Smooth, carbonic bite leaves a bit of bitterness. A little sweetness left in the mouth, but not much. Just the right blend of bitterness mixed with sweetness for a spiced beer. Pretty drinkable for a spiced beer from days long gone. The flowery taste might get annoying, but it’s good for a little bit.

Bottle. Golden, cloudy, small and fully diminishing head. Light to moderate lightly sweetish malty – wheaty aroma with lots of spiciness (coriander, citrus). Body is light to medium, malty – wheaty flavor with light sweetness, same spiciness just little bit less than in aroma. Finish is average, dryish and wheaty with spiciness. Old style dryish wheet beer with nice spiciness.

Hazy yellowish orange, small creamy head. Aroma is fruity and gruity with some spice. Flavour is wheaty, malty, caramel, some wit notes (mostly lemon), and a weird sidenote.
