Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

Tasted many years ago in the original Van Steenberge version; hazy peach blonde beer with moussy head and malt sweet and spicy character, some acetaldehyde (green apple) with wheaty sourishness, refreshing, retronasal coriander, dryishly sourish finish. Interesting.

20-Oct-14 (330-ml bottle)
This beer pours a hazy, golden-orange body with a thin, off-white head that fully dissipates. The nose is herbal and savory with some light notes of citrus peel, spices, and bread. On the palate, quite a lot of coriander, orange peel, and other dried herbs with a crackery malt base. The beer is light in weight, low-medium in carbonation, and dry on the palate, but not particularly refreshing. Overall, fun to try but seems pretty insubstantial.
