3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at home.
Pours a hazy strawlike gold, indeed like the typical whitebeers, with a frothy white head and light carbonation.
The aroma is indeed heavily dominated by coriander, with peppery notes, some malts, wheat and yeast.
I quite like the beers by Jopen, but I did expect a bit different whitebeer from them, and therefore was a bit surprised when the coriander was also demanding mist space in the taste. There’s notes of floral citrus, a lot of cloves and cardemom, hint of bayleave ( but I expect that will be the gale they use, although that’s supposed to be sweet...), a touch of honey and lemon ofcourse. It’s got an oily mouthfeel with an anisidic( is that the right word for something tasting a bit like anise?), peppery aftermatch with a very thin silt lining.
For my taste the coriander and lemon could me more subdued to make the perfect balance, it’s pretty acidic(citrus) in overtone after a while.
Nevertheless it’s a very refreshing and beautiful beer, specially once you know about the "gruit" they used for it, so the historical effort alone makes it interesting. On a hot summers’ day it’s one you can’t beat in refreshment if you’re into whitebeers!
