COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

Poured a medium, hazy orange color with a larger sized white head. Lots of small particles. Aromas of spices, bananas, and lemons. Lighter tastes (not as strong as the smell would have led me to believe). Fizzy body that also came across as flat and boring (does that make any sense).

A lightly hazed blonde ale with a lacing white head. A plesant fruity aroma of ginger, cranberries and honey, like a fruit cake. In mouth, a dissapointing ale, with sweetish malt and light lactic points, a bit of fruity esters but I cant taste the other spices from the aroma. Bought at the Cracked Kettle, and tasted in Nov. 2006.

Cloudy copper coloured beer with a fast fading white head. Aroma of light toffeeish malt, a bit of coriander citrus notes, cardamon and some yeasty dustiness. Fairly thin bodied. As it warms it seems to sweeten a bit. Some citrusy tangerine flavour with a subtly herbal finish. Okay, but not really great.

Following PINT-information, all Jopen beers are currently brewed at Van Steenberge brewery, Belgium. Ochre colour with amber shine. Slim white head. Nose is diacetyl and coriander. Sweet taste. Perfumed like Basmati rice. Diacetyl. Diacetyl gives false sweetness and fuller mouthfeel. Poor. Not something Van Steenberge should be proud of.

Bottled at The London/Joet Gathering Chez Chris_O. A copper coloured beer with a hint of orange and no head. The aroma is full of elderflower and lychee. The taste is over-sweet and syrupy. Very very floral and a bit unpleasantly odd really.

Monstrous diacetyl punch covering a flat, white grapey, mead-like sweetness...Spices roam aloof in this sedentary texture but don’t quite know where to settle...After having loved their Koyt, I’m led to believe that I need to resample this under different conditions...

Tea aroma, wheaty too. Pale cloudy yellow, thin head. Tea continues in a tanniny taste. Drying, wheaty and spicy coriander. Dry finish. Pretty OK, but as I’m unaccustomed to the herbs it didn’t quite press the ’beer’ button.

Pours gold and cloudy (very yeasty looking) with some sparse white foam on top. Aroma is dominated by lots of spice, (coriander, perfume, some lavender elements), hints of sweet malt and slightly sugary. Taste incorporates a nice wheat like backbone with spice and some hints of citrus thrown in. Mouthfeel is thick and viscous. Finish yields some hints of pepper. Very sessionable. I’m surprised by the low scores.
