COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

UPDATED: FEB 21, 2007 Bottled at Monk’s Café, Stockholm. Hazy golden, small head. Lemony vegetable aroma. Sweet and perfumy with light body and clean mouthfeel and dry finish. With an interesting and unusal spicyness, but also with an unpleasant touch of boiled vegetables and a too clean mouthfeel.

(12oz bottle) Particulate-filled murky amber body topped by quickly dissipating medium off-white head. Aroma is mild sweet, cardemom, light orange peel, light herbal, pepper. Taste is medium sweet, cardemom, orange, honey, light herbal. No bitterness evident. Watery light body. Not bad, but then again, it has nothing that would make me inclined to drink it again.

Murky, pale straw body with a poor lasting head. The aroma seemed to be of soft wheat notes, with my other half picking up honey. Soft in the taste as well, thin body, some ginger, yeast, citrus and soft carbonation. Pleasant and easy drinking with no big characters standing out, but nothing really making you yearn for more.

Bottle at Spuyten Duyvil. Cloudy amber, nice color. Low off-white head. Aroma of spices mostly, coriander, sage, baked cookies, flour. Appears mostly sweet and grainy overall, a malt/yeast performance. On the tongue, spices become more overwhelming and develop into a shocking acidity. ROsemary and thyme nuances observable. It’s not blended too well and the flavor feels very short. Astringent and thin. Lively carbonation, thin (soda mouthfeel).

Bottle. Sweet and spicy nose, floral and heathery (heatherine?) with a touch of lemon cleaner and something nearing coriander. Orange peel, white pepper, and honey. Sedimenty orange-golden body with an aggressively-diminished head. Taste is floral and slightly earthy with pale malts at the fore. Thin, watery body, wittish feel nears oily consistency. Wheat notes are refreshing, but the beer is not. No bitterness or sourness. Reminds of one’s first foray with herbal tea. I have had gruits before and rather liked some of them; this isn’t the shining exemplar of the traditional ales movement. On the whole, a bit of a throwaway, or perhaps enjoyed as a nice changeup from your everyday wit.

(bottle, 30cl) Cloudy yellow colour with a blond medium-sized foamy head. Yeasty and slightly sour wheaty aroma with notes of citrus and moderate spicy notes. Sweet and slightly sour flavour, light to medium bodied with a rather soft and slick carbonation for a Wheat. Citric wheaty and yeasty taste with a tolerable note of spices; moderately dry, slightly salty and spicy finish with a light tartness. Pretty disappointing Gruit beer, works as an average Witbier. 16.III.10
