COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

Bottle from Party Town. Poured a hazy golden color with a small white head that modtly lasted with good lacing. Good aroma of spice and yeasty fruit. Medium body with smooth texture. Good fruity sour & sweet flavor with a spicy complex finish of moderate duration. Interesting complex good brew.

Yellow, brown. Nice herbal, yeasty aroma. Yeasty flavor, a bit wheat-like and a little bit sour. Overall an interesting brew with a historical story attached to it.

This is, I believe, my first gruit beer and, given the opportunity, will not be my last. Not that it’s that great. More like interesting. (The experience reminds me of having my first Fraoch. Interesting then; enjoyable now.) It pours a cloudy lemon yellow with a skinny white head. The aroma is quite refreshing, grassy, herbal (but not like Koyt, as they say), with a lemon twist. The brew lost its carbonation early on, but has a tart mouthfeel to take its place. Spicy (both sweet and bitter) but light to the taste buds, this has a dry, lemony finish. Nice.

Pours light golden with a fully receding white head. Notes of phenolic apple, cinnamon and tart acids. Thin to medium bodied, lightly sour with soft carbonation.

(Bottle 30 cl) Courtesy of yespr. Hazy, pale golden with a small, white head. Very spicy aroma. Fairly light body with sweetish, malty accents. Notes of flowers and honey. Very subdued bitterness. Unusual and quite interesting. 051007

Hazy gold/bronze, disappearing off white foam. Nose of full spectrum (light to dark) past ripe fruits, crisp citrus, wheat, sweetness. Interesting. Same flavor with more spice, lemon accents. Smooth, medium body would benefit from more gas. Unique brew.

cloudy, murky gold/orange with no head. specks in beer. citrusy, caramel, butterscotch aroma. flavor is lightly sour with butterscotch, honey and toffee notes. hints of stingy citrus. tastes kind of like honey/lemon tea(might be good warmed) strange crackly mouthfeel(pop rocks?). light-med bodied. several herbs are present but i can’t identify them. more of neat experience than anything i would drink regularly. enjoyable.
