Commercial Description:
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

Appearance: Pours a clearish, light amber body with a small-sized, wispy, white head. Smell: Sweetish though indistinct maltiness mingled with a touch of lemon and enveloped with a mild savory, spicy herbal mix. Taste: Light, transient tastes of humble barley and simple wheat with a faint sweetness. Faint lemony undertone with the absolute merest amount of tartness. The herbal, spicy character does add a bit of zing to the proceedings, but, like everything else in the beer, it remains light. Finishes dry, lightly crisp, and with the mild hints of herbs and spices persisting on the tongue. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body that’s barely managing not to wander off into watery territory. Moderate carbonation. Drinkability: Essentially, it’s a witbier that lands on the lighter end of the style spectrum with a spice/herb blend thrown in in lieu of hops. Worth a try? Sure! Worth two tries? Well, let’s not get carried away.

300 ml bottle. From the Netherlands. Pale yellow/golden colour with small white head. Aroma of citrus (lemon/orange), caramel, vanilla and spices. Flavour is quite one dimensional and disappointment. Watery. Citrus and some caramel sweetness, vanilla and some spices. Not very good example of Belgian Witbier.

Tap at Bruxelles at sea, Zandvoort. Good refreshing beer, small head, medium carbonated. Hints of spices (citron, orange peels). Somewhat light, not a long finish

300ml Bottle - Hazy golden in colour, with a small white head. Spicy and slightly musty aroma with hints of lemon and herbs. Interesting taste, with spice and hints of lemon and tea, accompanied by some herby elements.

Cloudy yellow with floaters. Lasting white head. Aroma of herbs and spices with a touch of cookie. Flavour is very wit-like. Refreshing with a bready note and some herbs. In the aftertaste I can sense some gale for sure.
