Commercial Description:
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

In the bottle from HyVee CB. Pours a hzy gold with dark tiny particles that are heavy and electron dense. Minimal white head. The yeast cake in the bottom was dark, thick and impossible to dislodge, so the appearance might be more wit-like for others if they can coax the yeast off the bottom. Aroma is remarkable and amazing. Apple orchard aroma. Smells of a real barbershop (witch hazel and bay rum). Gooseberries. Caramel. Flavor does not match the wonderful aroma. Thin in body. Lacks a substantial palate. Tartness predominates. Orange and lemon flavors, but fails to deliver the goods promised by its flirtatious aroma.

From a 12 oz. brown bottle with a blurb and coded lot/freshness date on the back label. Poured a cloudy amber hued orange with a foamy head that settled into a thin lacing. Aromas of spice, coriander, herbs and orange peel. Moderate carbonation and a smooth, slick lightish medium bodied mouthfeel. Pleasant and mild tasting, softly tart fruity, apricots and pear with a light orange zest, mild spices and herbs, nutmeg, and a dryish spice and orange finish. I was expecting a bit more taste from this when I purchased it, so for me, average drinkability. I was hoping this would be more tasty than it was, it will be a while before I try it again.

Very intesting beer... bottle from the Belgian Room, NYC. Other than Heavyweight Two Druids, this is the only other gruit I’ve had. An intense fruity character lined this beer, along with a powerful herbal/sage/parsley aroma. The fruits in the taste (wheaty fruits -- lemon/banana/kiwi/fruit punch) were a bit overwhelming. Spicing was noticable but subtle.

Bottle. Nice, spicy aroma, slightly peppery. Slightly cloudy golden colour, small white head. OK mouthfeel, but watery flavour. The flavour has a subtle spiciness to it, and the aftertaste is teaish.
