COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

Cloudy and golden in appearance with a small but creamy head, which vanished quickly. The most apparent feature is the spice that comes across as citrus and orange. It’s also somewhat sweet with a bite like honey and ginger. More beers should have this amount of character and balance. Lots of earthy elements like hay and some sort of root spice.

Pours a cloudy dull yellow ochre, low carbonation and a thin fizzy white head and no lace. Aroma is oxidized with paper, lightly spiced with juniper, and other minty herbs, and even greem mint jelly and lemongrass. Flavor is grainy, wheat, more oxidation, herbs and a minty bitter and very dry finish. Wierd astringent and grainy aftertaste.

UPDATED: FEB 21, 2007 Bottled at Monk’s Café, Stockholm. Hazy golden, small head. Lemony vegetable aroma. Sweet and perfumy with light body and clean mouthfeel and dry finish. With an interesting and unusal spicyness, but also with an unpleasant touch of boiled vegetables and a too clean mouthfeel.

Slightly sour aroma of stone fruit. Otherwise a bit unusual. Color of ripe apricot with no head. Starts a bit of unripe stone fruit, followed by a hint of sweetness. It’s basically dry and a tad tart. A principal flavor apparently comes from Bayberry, aka English Bog Myrtle, and that’s the badge of the Campbells. The Swedes use it to kill insects, and the dried berries are used as spice - so it’s good we are not insects. This is what ale was 600 years ago or so, and it still holds its own. Mind, it’s not a DIPA, but it makes a change.

Bottled. Orange golden colour, small white head. Aroma is strong fruit, earth and ashes in aroma. Some herbs and spices also noteable. Flavour is glueish fruits along with spices and herbs. A very different beer, surprising flavours. Refreshing and interesting, but flavourwise I didn’t like it too much.

Bottle Pale amber beer with a thin whitish head. Slightly sour citrus (lemon-lime) aroma with some spice. Low carbonation. Lemon-lime flavor with some wheat and herbal tones. Light mouthfeel because of low carbonation. I agree with below in that it reminds me a bit of a less sweet, lower carbonated sprite/beer mix.

(Bottled) Hazy yellow-orange color with a small, vanishing head. Crisp, sprite-like lemon-lime-herby rosemary aroma. Lime-fruity, lightly herby-coriandery, somewhat dish-washing-liquidy flavor with a peppery finish. Light to medium-bodied, quite low-carbonated palate. A different brew, sure, but not as good as the best witbiers. Still pretty refreshing and interesting overall.
