Commercial Description:
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

Bottle, snifter. Hazy peach-gold with small particles. Small, frothy white head. Honey, toasted wheat, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, sweat aromas. Flavor introduces some grapefruit tartness. Lightly sweet, moderately acidic flavor. Lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter finish. Medium body, oily texture, moderate carbonation. Interesting to be sure, just not the best drinking experience. Spices are all muted and the tartness is a bit overpowering.

21 Jun 2005 - (Inge B&B, Haarlem) - Earthy and vinuos aroma. Cloudy orange, light brown colour, with good head and reasonable lacing. nutty hop and vinuos flavour, well balanced malt and light fruit. Overall - Surprisingly good for a style that I would not normally like.

Cask at Kent BF. Golden opaque beer iwth bubblegum and some sweetish fruit. Followed by long good finish. I would not be able to distinguish this from a wheat beer, but i liked it

this one was interesting. yeasty nose with some candy aroma as well. taste was mostly sweet with spicy finish. light and pleasing. finish was strange, of course due to lack of hops, but this seemed to work ok even though i am a bit of a hop head. always interesting to try a new style

This beer has a pale light yellow body - hue apperance and a coarse light white scum collar. I have drunk the beer from the bottle and it had not much carbonic acid. The initial flavor taste is like water with a light spicy afther tast.

Aroma of butter, grapefruit and wheat like a wit, and light herbs. Orange with small pieces of brown sediment. the same aromas are also founds as flavors. There is more grapefruit. Dry, grassy finish. finish. Reminds me of some heather beers I have tasted. This is not suitable for sipping, but the flavors are best experienced when consumed as a session beer. But at $5 for the 12 oz, that isn’t really possible.

Well this is supoosed to be a wit so this is under the wrong catagory. Not bad I like this sdtyle very much but as wits go this is nothing special. It sounds real interesting when you read the copy but it is rather watery if crisp. Better then many beers but for its style just OK.

(Bottle) Pours a lightly cloudy orange body with a medium white head. Aroma of mustiness, Zanzibarian spice farm, and some hints of orange peel. Flavor of oats, various herbs, and some fruit. Unique!
