Commercial Description:
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

Snow white head, hazy golden body. Fruity aroma mostly orange and citrus, sharp and fresh. Notes of yeast. Thin flavor, some tart citrus notes with hay hints. Not bad, just not very interesting and very thin bodied.

Hazy warm-orange color with a nice light colored creamy head. Fine cookie aroma’s with fruity hints like stonefruits, citrus, and confit d’orange. This beer has a lively taste with a cake like mouthfeel. Also hints of fruit cake in the afthertaste. Overall impression, a little flat but smooth beer.

The first thing I noted about this beer was the lack of hop presence. That was before I realised it was a recreation of a gruit beer and didn’t have any hops. The herbs used in place of provided an interesting alternative, but I didn’t find them assertive enough. Vaguely medicinal. Overall a bit dull, thin and watery. Extra marks for interest though. Bottled. January 2005.

Poured a medium, hazy orange color with a larger sized white head. Lots of small particles. Aromas of spices, bananas, and lemons. Lighter tastes (not as strong as the smell would have led me to believe). Fizzy body that also came across as flat and boring (does that make any sense).

Pepper, dandelion, hint of mint (esp. in the flavor). Hazy yellow brown with irregular head. Vinegar flavor, clove, lemon drop. I can understanding someone saying there is honey, too. Lemon poppyseed pound cake. It suggests a sweet finish. Interesting in its complexity. Herbal tea quality. I would want to drink this beer if I had a bad cold. Unremarkable palate. Interesting and drinkable.

So so. Poured a clever orange cloudy color. Wispy head. Slight tart in the palate. Really nothing special.
