Commercial Description:
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

A hazy yellow colored beer, with a thick white head. The aroma is very fruity, fresh with spices and some flowers. The taste is fresh fruity like citrus flowers wheat, spices and herbs. Nice bitterness. The aftertaste is some bitter for a while.

12 oz. Golden-orange with very little foam. Aroma is spicy sour berries with a touch of cellar funk and brown sugar. Flavor is tart berries and sour apple cider with some leather funk and a twist of lemon juice. Some faint oak on the finish. Light body is watery, acidic tingly and finishes dryish. Not a bad refresher and a nice alternative to a Wit or a fruit beer.

Hazy, pale blond appearance. Very sharp, zesty aroma with citrus and coriander notes. Feels a little on the thin side. Is very refreshing and tangy though and would make a great summer session beer.

Pours clear amber into a tumbler. White sickly bubbles recede to skim rim. Peach and strawberry aromas. Tingly and fruity (peaches, pears and apples) from front to back. Mildly lactic sour finish. A little cider-like.
