Commercial Description:
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

This bottled brew poured a large sized head of finely sized white colored mostly diminishing bubbles that left behind a poor lacing. The body was hazy carbonated and there were spices notably floating in it. It had a herbal aroma mixed with hops and malt. The mouth feel was initially smooth and finished with a malty spicy note. The flavor was subtle with spices mixed with malt and mildly hopped.

Bottle. Large creamy and smooth white head that contained fine-small sized bubbles that mostly diminished. Very little carbonation, transparent and yellow hue. Malty, hoppy, sweet and fruity aroma. Sweet and malty flavor. Smooth palate. light bodied and excellent lacing.

duvel tulip glass: this brew reminded me of a very weak and watered down lambic crossed with a wheat. it’s dry and just a little bit sour; this is down in a good way. core flavors are citrus and plant roots. it’s refreshing in the poorest way. not offensive; only alright.

Tart, fruity aroma, plentiful wheat malt and citrus, along with notes of light brown sugar, unfamiliar, leafy and earthy herbal tones, graham, peppery spice, orange, lemon and tangerine, some melon rind as well(?). Medium orange color, quite cloudy and lightly sedimented with a slight, fading head. Tart and fruity up front, becoming slightly sweeter and with a big herb and citrus finish. Some lingering tea-like flavors and faint woodiness. Palate is a tad watery and thin, very effervescent. Probably supposed to be fairly refreshing, and almost is, but the unfamiliarity and the high carbonation keep this from being something I would consume at quantity or with any speed. All in all, very different.

Has a cloudy reddish yellow color. The head is medium and slightly yellow. There are many fast bubbles floating up. Aroma is caramel, oranges and also seems to hint at cherry pie The taste is an interesting mix of sweet and sour. It intitially hits you with sour cherries and follws with a creamy vanilla. Also has notes of flowers white wine. A very refreshing summer drink. has a little too much carbonation.

Cloudy orange coloured. Very interesting notes of various spices and tea. Unfortunately it is slightly thin.

Cloudy white in appearance. Coriander and vaguely "spicy" aroma. Lemon and coriander flavor up front, but fades to a watery nothingness in the finish.

Slightly sweet spiced aroma. A decent witbier, but nothing terribly exciting.
