Commercial Description:
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

Tea aroma, wheaty too. Pale cloudy yellow, thin head. Tea continues in a tanniny taste. Drying, wheaty and spicy coriander. Dry finish. Pretty OK, but as I’m unaccustomed to the herbs it didn’t quite press the ’beer’ button.

Straw colored, hazy with a small, dense and creamy head. The aroma has sweetness, notes of coriander and wheat. The flavour has sweetness, notes of newly harvested grain, coriander, spices and no bitterness. Nice and completely uncomplicated.

30 cl bottle. Pours hazy light & pale yellow with a white foam. Aroma & looks are very witbier like. Wheat & a small touch of coriander & citrus. Fresh & quaffable!

Bottle. High and lasting fluffy white head. Hazy yellow body. Fruity and yet spicy aroma of banana and pear plus what I think is coriander with a light touch of lemon. Lemon apple flavor with a herbal touch that I cannot quite figure out. The general impression is however a light and fresh beer without much hops bitterness but quite refreshing though. Low carbonation and a short aftertaste.

Poured an only slightly cloudy dingy gold color with an ample white foamy head and some nice effervescence. Minimal lacing. The aroma was light Belgian yeast beneath some lighter floral/herbal spice and some lemony citrus. The flavor was tart citrus, light spice (pepper) and a bit of yeast and malt. Lively carbonation. Average mouthfeel.

From a ($5.69) 12 oz bottle. Pours ever so slightly cloudy, pale orange. Very little carbonation -- only a few bubbles came to the surface. Smells overwhelmingly of mustard with a background of honey. Taste is tart and honey, lacking any maltiness. Mouthfeel is thin and watery. The beer is almost as flat as water. Tart, spicy lingering aftertaste. Made me downright unhappy. Drain pour.
