COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

Hazy white. Nose a bit spicy, a little soapy. Has expected wit spiciness, but it's pretty restrained. Citric, a bit of fruit, but largely pretty bland.

Hazy orange, moderate head, some lacing and retention. Aroma is very fruity spicy with orange and belgian yeast type notes. More herbal spicy notes, hard to describe. Medium to light body, fairly sweet boring malt finish. Somewhat interesting but not that special.

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2008 Highly impressive dutch beer. This gruit stuff is really good. Its what makes the aroma and taste so unique. This beer is not heavy and very different to any witbier that I have tried. I recommend this all the way.7/3/8/3/17

Re-rate: I wold guess this is the same batch as my first rate. Got it at a place where this could have easily been sitting for a few years. Pours with a small head and a hazy orange/copper color. Aroma is a bit aged cardboard with light too old sourness but a lot of strong musk, light mustard, and spicy honey, A bit overwhelming at first, but once you get past the aged and musk there are cool little aspects. Taste is musky, light spoiled-orange tea, some sweetness and a cheap honey aftertaste. Coriander and tea aspects linger for a while as well. Easy drinking despite the thicker and slicker mouthfeel. Doing good despite the age. 7/3/7/3/15

Bottle sampled. Pours amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of citrus, spices, and fruit. The flavor is sweet, fruit, citrus, spices, and has no traces of hops, or carbonation.

So so. Poured a clever orange cloudy color. Wispy head. Slight tart in the palate. Really nothing special.

Aroma is sweet and fruity with notes of apple cider, vinegar, spice, and some malt. Flavor is very spicy and tangy with notes of citrus, apple cider, vinegar, some herbs. Generally light bodied with a tangy somewhat tart finish.

Yuck! I liked the Jopen Koyt but didn't like this at all. Misty amber with foamy white head. Nose and taste were potent and unpleasant.
