Commercial Description:
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

Bottle, snifter. Hazy peach-gold with small particles. Small, frothy white head. Honey, toasted wheat, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, sweat aromas. Flavor introduces some grapefruit tartness. Lightly sweet, moderately acidic flavor. Lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter finish. Medium body, oily texture, moderate carbonation. Interesting to be sure, just not the best drinking experience. Spices are all muted and the tartness is a bit overpowering.

Cloudy white in appearance. Coriander and vaguely "spicy" aroma. Lemon and coriander flavor up front, but fades to a watery nothingness in the finish.

300ml Bottle - Hazy golden in colour, with a small white head. Spicy and slightly musty aroma with hints of lemon and herbs. Interesting taste, with spice and hints of lemon and tea, accompanied by some herby elements.

Bubbly white head. Hazy deep golden hue. Slightly herbalish, perfumey, yeast, watermelon nose. Definately reminiscent of a wit, with orangey, and lemon citrus flavors throughout. Terribly refreshing, herbal and very quaffable. I am a fan of hops, but when a beer can taste this good without them, I am impressed. Very flowery, acidic, light bodied, herbal, citrus, grass, crisp and dry finish.
