Commercial Description:
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Adriaan is made as a lighter version of a gruit beer. Gruit is a medieval herbal mixture of which sweet gale is the most characteristic. Brewers used this gruit before hops were introduced. The beer contains 5% alcohol and is also brewed with herbs, but different ones than those used in Koyt. The herbs used in Adriaan contribute in the refreshing taste of Adriaan. The light taste of Adriaan can be compared with Wheat beers (Witbier) as those are made in Belgium and Holland.

Poured an orange-metallic hue unlike most beers with a small bubbly head. Great aroma of floral herbs (bottle didn’t specify and I can’t guess) Tasted like orange peel, lemon, or other fruits. A little watery in finish, but I could session the heck out of this beer if it were cheaper.

I was pleasantly surprised by this gruit. Most gruits seemed to be overly spiced and end up tasting like Chai. Not this one. Done lightly on the herbs, it has a delicate floral nose and a beautiful clear coppery color. No yeast or protein haze, even after a swirl. Head was white but fell instantly. Flavor was unique, without the bitterness of hops, but without the sweetness of other gruits. Perhaps they use some acidified malt to make it tarter.

A hazy yellow colored beer, with a thick white head. The aroma is very fruity, fresh with spices and some flowers. The taste is fresh fruity like citrus flowers wheat, spices and herbs. Nice bitterness. The aftertaste is some bitter for a while.

Bottle. GBBF2003. Hazy amber gold colour, moderate white head and low condition. Slightly spicy with some honey notes in the aroma. Malt in the mouth with a thin dry spicy, almost corriander, flavour and a sweetish finish that becomes chalky and dry.

hmm, gruit eh? smells cidery, spicy, fruity, slightly wheaty and yeasty but those last two scents are more subdued. herbally sweet, and it’s quite a nice interplay between the sweetness and a tiny bit of acidic tartness. more tartness in the finish which allows it to finish dry although most of the flavor is sweet. like most ’traditional ales,’ this is another sweet beer and it’s pretty likeable.

hazy, golden color, big, elegent, though quick to fade head. Aroma is deliciousness, indeed: spicy, airy, with light citric fruit, and a big helping of yeast, slightly musty and tart. Great blitz of citric hops right off the bat, big carbonation, spritzy as they get. Nice taste, but the effervescence overcomes the flavor. Body is on the light side, texture is minimal..lemony flavor kicks in a bit more toward the end. Tasty little beer. "Real Dutch Gruit Witbier" boasts the label. Tastes like one, too, smooth, tasty, ultimately very drinkable. But...probably not worth the $4.59 I paid for this 12 oz. bottle. don’t let me stop you, though...
