COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Until the end of 2008 brewed by Huyghe. Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen Hoppenbier is a double hopped three grains beer. This blond beer contains 6.8% alcohol and is replicated from the city recipe of 1501. Jopen Hoppenbier is a refreshing beer with a light malty start and a long bitter aftertaste. It has been brewed since 1994 from barleymalt, (unmalted) oats, wheatmalt and Saaz and Brewers Gold hops.

A sturdy white head on top of a yellow body. The smell is metallic. I had to bite my way to the liquid, and that was a hopy experience on its own. The beer itself is hops before and hops after. The body is its means of transportation. No more, no less. The palate of bitterness is one dimensional, and is even boring after a while. The metal stays omnipresent. What started out as promising, ends in a bit of a disappointment.

Currently drinking while typing. A good fizzle as the cap comes off and after pouring you have a nice aroma. It’s a mix of sprucey hops, sweet gentle caramel, malts and a subtle spice rack type smell. Nice looking beer, coarse bubbles in the head mixed with fine ones leave the soft white head looking rather odd, lovely appetising pale golden coloured brew. Malts in the initial taste with a crisp refreshing edge with a little dryness on the finish, flavours of spruce, grassiness, hops, malts, sour yeasts and a long lasting bitter edge which is slightly alkaline. Maybe a little coarse in the mouth for a Belgian style ale, not as smooth as most in the style but either way it holds respectable carbonation. Nice beer, interesting to try this after previously trying the Jopen Koyt! Not bad but it isn’t a stand out brew.

Slightly misty grey orange with frothy white head. Fruity aroma, mandarins, together with light yeasty notes and some dried leaves. Wow, really lovely bitter and full flavoured. Not ruthless tough. Mouthfeel is smooth and a great dry ending. Surprised and very happy with this. (33cl bottle)
