4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 rauchbier (3205) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - MAY 8, 2003
Bottle conditioned. Deep red brown, moderate white head and moderate condition. Aroma is big and complex and a bit of a rollercoaster ride. Starts with a herbal note that reminded me of sage sausages, next beefstock then malt extract and finally as it warms a spiciness emerges. In the mouth it has a lot of similarities with a trapist dubbel but with a lot more spiciness, which lingers into the finish which becomes dry with time. No hops were harmed in the making of this beer, apparently.

Tap, café De Geus, Enschede. Cherry flavor. Herbal with some bitterness, due to herbs, not to hops. Sweet and full bodied, just a bit creamy. Some red berries-like sourness.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 argo0 (9265) - Washington DC, USA - JAN 20, 2003
Opaque dark brown with no head. Aroma is mild raisin, yeast. Taste is sweet, plum, spiciness, some cherry, perhaps some chocolate maltiness. Fairly light and easy-drinking beer.
3.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 Kathy (241) - Washington DC, USA - JAN 20, 2003
Strong aroma that, to me, was off-putting, at first. After it airs out a little, the aroma is of raisins soaked in lime juice. It's an odd aroma, but it settles in. The color is deep amber-brown. Not opaque, but rich. We didn't get much head on the pour, though. Flavor is surprisingly balanced, given the aroma. It's mildly sweet, rich, and not terribly obtrusive. It goes down smooth and easy and ends with a spiciness, then a maltiness that's somewhat reminiscent of the aftertaste of a lager.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 jerohen (1797) - Bussum, NETHERLANDS - DEC 14, 2002
UPDATED: MAR 13, 2005 Brown with nice thick head. Very nice complex nose, malty, spicy and some wood. Rich and complex flavor, some alcohol. Nice warming malty finish. Additional note: Compared a fresh one with a nine year old bottled version (from 1996), which was brewed at Halve Maen. The flavour of the old sample has obviously matured, but it also significantly lost complexity: besides the port-like liqourice flavour almost all other flavours present in a fresh sample were lost or severely suppressed. I guess nine years is just too long for this beer (or was it just another recipe back then?).
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - OCT 20, 2002
UPDATED: MAY 8, 2003 Huge rocky foam with excellent stickiness. Quality and unique aroma which reminds me of Fantome characteristics: mint, herbs, orange peel, pepper, bubble gum, wood, and cilantro. Aroma seriously rivals Corsendonk Christmas yeastiness. Sits absolutely perfect-o on the tongue: soft, tiny, and velevty bubbles. Very complex flavors of cherry, numerous herbal notes, hint of chocolate, subtle iron, cork, doppelbock-like sweet cotton candy round malt, and yeast. I love this long and medicinal and tropical fruiy finish. For a beer with no hops, it had this hophead worried. Needless to say I was more than impressed and am surprised by its poor ratings.
