3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 jaghana (2110) - Strasbourg (France), FRANCE - JUL 16, 2011
Bottle 30cl, a cloudy amber beer with huge head and good lacing. Nose is ginger like and spicy. Aroma is syrupy sweet, caramel malt but very fruity on pepper, ginger and licorice. Herbal notes are there and very pleasant, finish is on fresh hops. I really like this beer, a bit sweet anyway.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 prawlie (566) - Berkshire, ENGLAND - JUL 10, 2011
30 mL bottle from BOE poured into a Hoegaarden glass. Dark brown with a little fizz and generous head (although a bit cornetto like, but that could be the glass). Smells unusual, sweet and herby. Particularly sweet, tastes like it smells. Tates a little bit garlicy, but thats probably my knowledge of herbs letting me down. Weird but kind of pleasant. Covers the alcohol content very well.

12/9/9/10/10/9

On tap at Jopenkerk, Haarlem on 4 April 2011. Darkish red / brown colour. Described by the server as made without hops but subsequent research suggests that may not be entirely correct. However, Koyt is a Dutch equivalent of gruit and various herbs and spices are quite dominant here. Language differences made an explanation of the herbs used difficult but I believe Bog Myrtle (aka Sweet Gale) is in the mix. I picked up notes of coriander too. Some medicinal cough syrup accents in the flavour too. Quite sweet but not too sticky. Overall, interesting and enjoyable.

Bottle from the Mitra. Surprisingly good, because I never had a Gruit beer. Very tasty. Somewhat between a red and a brown beer. The aroma is very sweet, but not too sweet. The absence of hop is clear, because it lacks the bitterness. But is really was a very nice suprise and I will certainly explore the world of gruit beers more.
