Brewed by Proef for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Koyt is a dark beer with 8,5% alcohol and a warming herbal taste. The reddish-brown Koyt is the strong version of the old gruit beer. Note: this is not a kuit/kuyt!

2007 bottle, 750 ml with caged cork. Ready with a big Duvel glass in case of a gusher… but nope, not a problem this time. Pours reddish brown, fizzy like a soda, thin head. Smell is, um, like a rubber inner tube in the glass! Definitely, this got corked like a red wine. But a light herbal quality in the bottle. Wha hoppen? Okay, I can get past the nose and sip some of the beer, which is not as herbal as, well, other traditional ales, in fact, milder than some other old beers I’ve kept too long. So beyond the spoiled nose I find a slightly fruity ale, not too spicy and herbal, with a slight bit of tart marred by too much horseblanket. It’s a sign. I need to clear out my cellar!

Shared bottle. Pours is dark/ brown cloudy with thick tan head that last for a minute. Sweet aroma of honey, hadder, spicy, herbal. Taste is light sweet, light to medium sour, light bitter, lot of herbs. Heavy body, creamy texture, herbal aftertaste. Good, but due to herbal notes and alcohol amout very hardly drinkable for me.

Like a cross between a brown ale, a herbal ale and a bock beer, this is a nice winter warmer. It is pleasant but not too complex, although it houses many tastes. Some raisins, plums, caramel, cinnamon, cardemom, candy sugar, ---Rated via Beer Buddy (iOs)

Bottle. Murky brown with a beige head that fades. Cheerful aroma of spiced apples and brown sugar - ginger, mace, cardamon, white pepper. A lot more grunt and depth to the taste though, with darker sugars, raisins, dates and strong bread as well. Not surprisingly a bit medicinal at the end. No overt alcohol but drinks like a strong beer. Satisfying.
