Until spring 2009 brewed by Huyghe for Jopen. Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Brewed with three grains: barley, oats and wheat, as requested in mediaeval Haarlem, fresh-bitterish hops and spicey coriander. Jopen Lentebier is unfiltered and gets a secondary fermentation in the bottle. A darker blonde beer with a fruity aroma and a fresh, fullbodied taste.

330ml bottle. Clear amber color. Small size, white head, stays. Sweet, touch of caramel, faint fruity aroma. Burnt caramel- I mean real caramel not artificial shit, touch of yeast, dead grass in taste. Burnt dusty caramel malts in aftertaste. Alcohol is very well hidden. Soft carbonation. Moldy burps.

Bottled (from biernavigatie). Slightly hazy golden colour small white head. Aroma is fruity, some spices, mild grains and some wheat. Flavour is fruity, floral, some mild herbal and malty notes as well. Gets a bit more harsh once it gets warmer, so try it somewhat fridgecold...

Bottled, 330ml from Hopduvel Warehouse, Ghent, Belgium. Hazy gold with white head. There is a fairly spicy, herby note to this from the off alongside a fruity, yeasty character. Reasonably bittering with a crisp palate. Pretty decent.

On keg at Jopenkerk Haarlem - Hazy golden colour with average, frothy, minimally lacing, white head. Grainy and slightly yeasty aroma, some corn. Taste is initially minimally sweet pale malty, later dry oats, in the finish bitter hoppy, underlying hints of alcohol which is hidden quite well for a 7%.

On tap. Hazy yellow/orange. Aroma of citrus and lemongrass. Spicy fruity citrus taste. Didn’t get much coriander. Refreshing - closer to wheat beer than Belgian ale ?

33cl bottle from Põrgu. Not a typical belgian ale. Loads of fruity hops and coriander. Medium bodied, smooth and very satisfying drink. You do not really want to drink anything else after that during the same evening.

30cl bottle @ home from Melger’s, Haarlem. Cloudy orange copper color, medium off-white head. Aroma is tropical fruits and floral in the nose, lemon peel, caramel, licorice, quinine, quite hoppy, moderated, good balance. Taste is medium sweetness, medium to heavy hoppy bitterness, hint of fruity sourness, hint of salt. Full body, thin texture, soft carbonation, fine hoppy bitter finsh with quite long duration. Refreshing, easy to drink, fine hoppy spring beer.

Another of the classic Jopen beers, tasted in Van Steenberge’s version. Snow white, delicate, unstable head, warm orange blonde colour approaching amber, clear. Aroma of honeyish and caramelly malts, fresh orange, coriander, aniseed, apricot, young cheese and grass. Smooth caramel taste, delicately sugary, as from vanilla sugar, not sticky in any way, peachy, some light coriander and refreshing ’citrusness’, fresh grassy hops in the finish but ending a bit phenolic too. Other than that, this transcends the ’lentebok’ beers from the larger Dutch breweries.
