Until spring 2009 brewed by Huyghe for Jopen. Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Brewed with three grains: barley, oats and wheat, as requested in mediaeval Haarlem, fresh-bitterish hops and spicey coriander. Jopen Lentebier is unfiltered and gets a secondary fermentation in the bottle. A darker blonde beer with a fruity aroma and a fresh, fullbodied taste.

On keg at Jopenkerk Haarlem - Hazy golden colour with average, frothy, minimally lacing, white head. Grainy and slightly yeasty aroma, some corn. Taste is initially minimally sweet pale malty, later dry oats, in the finish bitter hoppy, underlying hints of alcohol which is hidden quite well for a 7%.

UPDATED: MAY 30, 2015 Another of the classic Jopen beers, tasted in Van Steenberge’s version. Snow white, delicate, unstable head, warm amber colour, clear. Aroma of honeyish and caramelly malts, honey, fresh orange, coriander, aniseed, apricot, young cheese and grass. Smooth caramel taste, delicately sugary, as from vanilla sugar, not sticky in any way, peachy, some light coriander and refreshing ’citrusness’, toasted and nutty malt middle, fresh grassy hops in the finish but ending perhaps a bit phenolic too. Clearly a move away from the blonde ’lentebok’ beers made by larger Dutch breweries. I recently tasted this beer as a 10 year old vintage too: obviously this beer is not intended to be cellared for such a long time, but the bottle I found proved interesting, looking darker than the young version, copper in fact, with dead yeast divided throughout the liquid (not an inviting look, by the way); aroma was expectedly oxidized and ’portorized’, with a soy sauce, sherry and molasses kind of quality to it, sweeter than the young one; taste also reflected more sweetness, honeyish almost, brown sugar and marmelade, with sherry-like oxidation but still very bearable; toasted bitterishness was still there, but the grassy hop bitterness had all but disappeared, but instead I got a dubbel-like aged beer which almost made feel I was in the Kulminator... Mouthfeel was evidently thinned out by age, but in spite of that, I still got a fairly stable, loose ’old beer head’. Interesting, but still recommended young, like most beers by far.

On tap. Hazy yellow/orange. Aroma of citrus and lemongrass. Spicy fruity citrus taste. Didn’t get much coriander. Refreshing - closer to wheat beer than Belgian ale ?

Drinking from tab at Meibockfestival Amsterdam. No special aroma, not bad, but nothing really comes up. The unclear orange beer has a small white head. The taste is hoppy and is therefore nicely bitter. Medium carbonation.
