In honor of Saint Martin, Jopen annually brews a masterpiece. Saint Martin was the saint of the brewers guild of Harlem. In earlier times artist and craftsmen had to undergo a test of skill. This masterpiece of 2012 is a limited edition. This year we chose a Rye Russian Imperial Stout of 10% for our beer. This thick black beer is full and strong in flavor because of the combination of roasted rye malt and various American hops.

Bottle, 30cl. Online. Aroma: Very nice roasted malts. Some coffee and chocolate. Appearance: Good head with sticky lacings. Really black beer. Taste: Roasted, almost burnt malts. Bit of coffee, hint of chocolate. Alcohol, caramel, banana. Palate: Medium/thick body. I’d like it thicker from the rye. Good carbonation.

Bottle @ Jopenkerk, Haarlem. Dark brown, big beige creamy head. Nose and taste of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, caramel, vanilla. Very well balanced, soft (!) mouthfeel, low carbonation, good body.

33cl bottle @ home from Melger’s, Haarlem. Dark brown color, long standing medium brownish head with excellent lacing. Aroma coffee lqueur, roasted malt, dark chocolate, red wine, licorice, soy sauce, at the end more roasty feel appears. Alcohol is slightly present. Taste light sweetness, heavy bitterness. Full body, sticky texture, soft carbonation, medum lasting roasted bitter finish. Simply and delicious, takes some time to drink, I can’t recognise rye.

Na de Jopen meesterstuk 2011 hoopte ik op een beter resultaat maar helaas bleek dit ook valse hoop.

Zo is in mijn ogen craft beer bedoelt. Sterk qua smaak, maar niet te. Alcohol is niet sterk aanwezig in de smaak

Mooie donker bruine kleur met een volle crème kraag. Ruikt koffie, vanille en crème. Smaakt koffie, vanille, iets gebrand. Iets bittere afdronk.

Pours a dark brown beer with a good white head. Smells chocolate, vanilla or bourbon. Tastes chocolate, bit vanilla and roasted. Average carbo, medium body and a sticky texture.

Bottle, bb 08/11/15. Pours dark brown with a large tan head. Aroma: rye, chocolate, dark fruit, somewhat boozy. taste: dark chocolate, rye bread, plums, raisins, cherries, wood, butter, hazelnut. Nice sweet/bitter balance, oily mouthfeel, long lingering dark chocolate and cherry finish with a hint of port. Lovely!

Bottle, BB 08/11/15. Pours a slightly muddy dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma is rich fruit cake, rum, some booze... Medium body, a bit thin, medium foamy carbonation. Its got wood, dark fruit, light leather, rum, malt loaf... Tastes OK, some good flavours, but the booze is a bit harsh, the balance is off and it’s thin for an impy.
