Until 2008 brewed by Huyghe. Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen 4 Grains Bokbeer is made as a ruby red beer made with the three traditional Haarlem grain and rye as a forth grain. The beer contains 6,5% alcohol and has a fruity aroma combined with the dark malts. The taste is lightly smoky from the dark malts used, but there is some sweetness in it to.

From tap. 2011. Pours a brown slightly unclear beer with a good tan head. Smells alcohol, port, caramel and malts. Tastes caramel, port, coffee and a little bit vanilla. Average carbo, medium body and a sticky texture.

Afdronk is lichtbitter. Een prettige bok!

Alengrin (2879) - BELGIUM - AUG 21, 2014
One of those Jopen beers originally brewed in Belgium. Atypical for a Dutch ’herfstbok’ in that it is made with four grains. Thick and firm, moussy, stable head, off-white. Dark hazy bronze colour. Complex malty and grainy aroma of caramel, cherries, banana, orange, yeast, soapy hops. Full, even a bit thick malty taste with refreshing fruity accents, sourish rye hint, typically soft oats, spicy notes, toasted bitterishness in the finish along with herbal hops. Creative interpretation of an otherwise rather dull style.

A Bockbeer. Dark brown colour with a small off white head. A dry character and also a dry aftertaste. Roasted malts are what makes the taste. Nothing that makes this stand out. A bit bland to be honest. It’s very drinkable but lacking a own character.

On tap @ Gollem’s Proeflokkal. Hazy dark amber/brown with a small beige head and little lacing. Aroma is nutty with red fruits, roasted malt, caramel and light smoke. Taste is slightly sweet and of nuts, caramel, light fruity notes, roasted malt and hints of smoke. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Slightly dry finish. Decent.

Bottle 30cl. as Jopen Bokbier. Opaque red-brown color, one finger creamy tan head, recedes slowly, thin layer remains, nice lacing; sweet roasted malt nose, caramel, cloves, hint of coffee; moderate sweet malty taste, slightly bitter, roasted, hint of coffee; medium to full body, bit watery texture; medium-dry bitter finish, slightly sweet. Not bad at all but more a porter than a bock.

750ml bottle served in a Belgian snifter. Consumed slowly with temperature rising from about 39F to 55F. This beer is new to the U.S. (GA only, so far). Pours a dark red-brown color with almost no head; a little spotty lacing is left on the glass. Looks like a porter. Aroma: A bit malty for a bockbeer, with suggestion of a Scottish ale. Some caramel, green apples, light spices, faint smokiness and mild alcohol esters. Taste: More malty than the smell suggests. Some caramel and darker roasted grains, with just hints of coffee and dark chocolate. Moderately complex owing to the grain bill. Mouthfeel: medium body and crisp carbonation. Dry finish. Overall: not a typical German Bockbier, but quite tasty and easily recommended.
