Commercial Description:
Brewed by Huyghe for Jopen (www.jopen.nl). Until 2006 brewed by Van Steenberge. Jopen 4 Grains Bokbeer is made as a ruby red beer made with the three traditional Haarlem grain and rye as a forth grain. The beer contains 6,5% alcohol and has a fruity aroma combined with the dark malts. The taste is lightly smoky from the dark malts used, but there is some sweetness in it to.

Hazy nut brown color, decent creamy off-white head. Sticky aroma of berries, dark malts and rye. Medium-bodied, smooth mouthfeel. Grainy, sweet and sour flavor. A bit burned malty, almost soy sauce -like. Wheat and rye can be picked from the flavors. Odd sourness makes me wonder if this is infected, but other ratings indicate that this may not be a case. Not my cup of tea.

0.30l bottle from Amstelveen. Dark brown with red hew. Almost no head, few islands of fermenting yeast were floating on the surface. Aroma is caramel and spice. Taste is combination of sweet and spicy bitterness. My modest nose and tongue could smell and taste some other things but I can’t describe it properly.

Clear ruby-red colour, small tan head. Aroma of sweet malts and spices. Flavours are bitter, alcohol well present. Has spices and hints of cherry. Mediocre.

Pours a very dark ruby with white chunks of sediment floating around. I guess I poured a bit too much. Nose is kind of musty with a malt tone to it and just a very slight touch of wood. Robust but mild aged dark fruit skins there as well. Flavor is a nice hearty malt with a touch of dark sugar. A little bit of wood. Feel is nice. High carbonation hitting the tongue. Thick liquid feel for sure. Overall this is an unusual bock. At least in comparison to the more traditional styles. I like it, as it is well made. It just isn’t your typical example of the style.

Pours deep amber into a Stem glass. Tan micro head recedes with no lacing to skim surface. Sweet, fermented pit fruit and alcohol aromas. Creamy and sweet dark caramel. Slight cloying in the finish.

The aroma is pretty nice with raisins, molasses, deeply toasted malt, and soy sauce. The appearance is brown with lots of chunks floating around (not a good sign). The flavor is like the aroma and sweet with a little vinegar and cardboard. The palate is thin but well carbonated. A little oxidized but I don’t think this would be that great fresh.

Sweet cidery aroma. Seriously unfiltered, this is not just cloudy but actually "chunky". Flavor is malty, sweet, cidery, with highly carbonated mouthfeel. Hints of citrus and salt. Nice complex flavors.
