JosephsBrau Heller Bock is a fine example of the regal brewing tradition still found in Germany today. This outstanding bock is golden in color, very rich, and moderately hopped. It is brewed with three types of imported malt, Hallertau aroma hops and lager yeast.

Golden pour into pint glass. Aroma is very yeasty and bread. Flavor is very malty but doesn’t offer a lot of complexity. Some spice notes and vanilla in the finish. Diffentley on the sweeter side but it is nothing offensive.

Bottle from Dan for Christmas. Aroma of light sweet malt. Amber with a nice white head. Mixture of sweet and bitter up front. Sweet malt doesn’t quite break through enough. Light roasted caramel flavor that is quickly washed with a bland bitterness.

1/19/2015. Bottle from Trader Joe’s. Golden with a white head. Herbal, grassy aromas. Acidic, bitter hops, malt, hay, light fruit with buttery notes.

12oz bottle, thanks to Chris R. $1.09 sticker on the cap. Best by 1/18/15. Bready caramel malt, some mild fruitiness, and a round lagery mild must/funk to it. Pleasant flavor overall. Mild peppery spicy hop. Clear orange color. Thin white head, leaving good ridges of lace. Medium body. Smooth, kind of crisp lighter carbonation, lightly slick finish. Pretty easy-drinking. Moderate sweet taste, light bitter, very mild bite in the finish. Pretty solid heller bock, especially at the price. Went alright with my skyline chili.

Tallahassee, Fl. - Trader Joe’s - 12 oz bottle. Medium copper pour, light quickly diminishing off-white head. Aroma has some light molasses sweetness, a hint of cotton candy. Flavor has some light baked brown bread accents, a touch of molasses, and some brown sugar. Mouthfeel has a nice thickness to it. Not bad at all.

Not bad but lacks the complexity and balance of the best versions of the style.

Smells kind of like malt likka - powdery, cereal, lagery. Clear, pale gold. Standard 12oz longneck, meh label. Tastes tinny and boozy - this is just half a hair from being King Cobra. Medium to lightish body, cereal tones, galvanized finish that clings. Yeck. TJ’s, Tallahassee.

Amber in color, clear with a thin head. Nice easy drinking beer. Good for a thirst quencher. Light flavor and easy finish.

Nothing wrong with this, it is too style, and no off tastes, but I am losing my taste for this style. Bread dough, grassy notes. Palate is crisp and clean, and a little sweet.

caramel, golden, hazy, minimal head, white foam, medium sweetness, lightly bitter, medium body, average carbonation, not hard to drink.

This isn’t an IPA or a porter. I write that because this style of beer is rarely recognized in the U.S. craft brew industry. It’s a helles bock very similar to what is served in the beer gardens of Munich. It is the ultimate session beer because it’s so drinkable with its prevalent malt and bread flavors. What sets it apart from the Buds and Coors of the world is that it’s not watered down. It features a subtle yet rich flavor. I like this style and this one is a fine example of it.
