JosephsBrau Heller Bock is a fine example of the regal brewing tradition still found in Germany today. This outstanding bock is golden in color, very rich, and moderately hopped. It is brewed with three types of imported malt, Hallertau aroma hops and lager yeast.

Golden pour into pint glass. Aroma is very yeasty and bread. Flavor is very malty but doesn’t offer a lot of complexity. Some spice notes and vanilla in the finish. Diffentley on the sweeter side but it is nothing offensive.

Bottle At a swim party. Not a great beer but I really didn’t expect much from this generic brand of a generic style.

July 26th, 2014 - Trader Joe must sell a lot of their name brand beer, because it always has a strong presence on the shelf ends and in the beer section. And I can see some appeal, especially for fans of German beers during a sweltering summer. Here we have the Heller Bock, dark yellow and a bit too dark to be called "gold!. The smell is light with corn and a touch of lime, and the flavor is very light, almost skeletal, with a sweet, cheap lager flavor though with a bit more body. Not the best beer you can find at Trader Joe’s...

Golden with a thin head and a faint nose. Moderately-carbonated with a medium mouthfeel and a sweet, syrupy finish with some alcohol warming.

Pours a clear, honey brown from a bottle. Aroma of honey and apples maybe? Kind of biscuity too, flavor is similar, with some bitterness at the end. Meh.

Clear honey in the glass. Nose again is malty and sweet. Palate is cloying, corny and...well, shouldn’t compassion for a buck. Good attempt.

Bottle from Trader Joe’s to tumbler. Aroma of bread, grass, vague lemon. Clear light golden, vanishing head. Sweetish bread slight banana, decent hop bite. Mouthfeel is slightly slick. Lingering slight lemony hop finish.

Clear golden liquid with a small white head. Scents of bread with some yeast. Faint herbal hop character. Sweetness from the start. Feel is a bit thicker with average carbonation. Flavor of sweet-dough yeast with a fruity character. Longer finish with pale malt and yeast. Not real clean but no major flaws. A bit too sweet.

Pour from a 12oz bottle. clear pale amber brew with white head, nice steady small head stays on top till the glass is drained. Aroma is sweet malt, bread, tart fruit, a little spice, some ethanol energizing the fruity notes. Taste is sweet malt up front with a little fruit and floral notes emerging in the middle of the swallow, stays sweet through the end with a slight rise in fruitiness and spice. Hints of honey in the end with a little ethanol as well. Not bad but the sweetness is too prominent and one dimensional.

Bottle at home. Clear golden pour with a high, frothy head. Oxidized bready malts on the nose. Tastes of raw wet bread dough, some dried dark fruits, floral hops, honey, very sweet underneath. Boozy finish which doesn’t really dry out at all.
