COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Josephsbrau Plznr (pilsner) is a celebration of noble hops from central Europe. This style of beer was developed by German brewmaster Joseph Groll in 1849 in the town of Plzen (Pilsen), Bohemia (modern day Czech Republic) and was the first beer to be brewed golden and clear. This beers pin-point fine bitterness is perfectly accentuated by its crisp body.

12 ounce bottle from Trader Joes. Pours a clear golden color with a small white head. The aroma is big sweet toast and corn. The flavor is more super sweet base malts, not very clean, a round rice or corn element to the flavor that you get in lots of cheap beer. Drinkable. Ive proven that much.

Bottle. Sour barley malt aroma. Golden yellow with small head. Sour corn/barley malt and lightly bitter grass flavor. Cheap crap lager taste.

355ml bottle. 2nd of two TJ marketed czech pilsners. This is 5% per the label. It is nearly identical in appearance aside form some smaller carbonation bubbles. The smell is much cleaner on this one, verly light fruits, grain, very clean and basic. Flavor is much dryer all around and more bitter. Early on a bit of sulphuric off-note but it recedes as you go. It has an herbal grassy hop character and effervescent prickling carbonation. Much different than their other czech pils, this one is more like Zatec beer than the pilsen tradition, even north german. It is good imo.

I try this about once a year for the past three years and I hope for better results. I always try to get a fresh bottle but its hard to tell with the best by dates. Drinking the new label batch where the labels are all made to look old school, best by 12/27/14. Clear pale gold color with visible carbonation. In my Franconia weizen glass the head is medium at first and fades to a surface cover lacing. The biggest let down that the has is the hops are always dull or in this case even skunky. Also has a slightly sweet corn or husk component, maybe DMS. Its light and the crisp mouthfeel is nice. I agree with Notalush that I would rather buy a Full Sail product at this price point. I also disagree with Frank and think the Bohemian Lager is the much superior product. Bottom line: looks good and feels good but doesnt taste good.

"not expecting greatness here, but i was really hoping for a nice, crisp hoppy pils. this bordered on macro, though not swill or offensive. i just got some semi-sweet generic corn-type malt, very (too) light hopping. i wanted a bite, it had none. Even for a buck, Ill pass."

Trader Joes Josephsbrau label has two beers under it that would seem to be the exact same thing. One is the Bohemian Style Lager and the other is this, Plznr, which is sold as a "Czech style lager." They are actually quite different beers and the difference is the Bohemian Style Lager is pretty much garbage and this is rather good. It is perfectly clear and golden in the glass and its head is dense and of fine bubbles. Small patches of lace dot the side of the glass. Its smell is of pleasanty grassy hops and fresh malted barley. This beer is dry overall but relatively low bitterness allows some some sweetness to come through, which helps highlight the malt character. This is a medium bodied to light beer which is not at all watery which, combined w/ vigorous and fine carbonation, makes for very drinkable beer indeed. It finishes w/ some lingering malt sweetness and a firm bite of bitterness. I dont know how the folks at Gordon Biersch, who are the people that ultimately brew this stuff, can make two beers of the same style where one is so good and the other is so bad but here it is and they have.

Very nice balanced lager. Not as crisp or bitter as Pils Urqeul, more like Czechvar. A good every day beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a a medium yellow with a thick white head that leaves no lacing. The nose is cereal. Palate is medium body. Taste is Pilsner malt with a balancing hops bitterness aftertaste that lingers.

JosephsBrau Plznr has a thick, pureed-type off-white head, a clear, bubbly, golden appearance, and significant lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, biscuit grain and grassy hop oil. Taste is of those elements, with an even slightly citrus hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium and a touch chewy, and JosephsBrau Plznr finishes crisp, refreshing, and semi-dry. RJT
