Josephsbrau Plznr (pilsner) is a celebration of noble hops from central Europe. This style of beer was developed by German brewmaster Joseph Groll in 1849 in the town of Plzen (Pilsen), Bohemia (modern day Czech Republic) and was the first beer to be brewed golden and clear. This beer’s pin-point fine bitterness is perfectly accentuated by its crisp body.

12oz bottle. Looks like this is replacing the older "Hopfest" but they are describing this as a Bohemian style pils instead of German, and I would agree with that here. A little on the darker side of gold, with a spicy hop aroma and a little bready malt to back it up. Fuller in the mouth for the style but very clean. Some sweet bready malt and earthy and spicy noble hop flavors. Not too far from Urquell or the like but not one of my favored examples of the style. Not a bad choice at Trader Joe’s awesome pricing, but not quite as refreshing as I like a pils.

Tastes more or less like old newspaper. Pours pale yellow. Some chemical astringency. Light bitter finish. Rather horrible. Bottle.

12 ounce bottle, label says best before 11/25/15. Served in a pilsener glass, the beer pours a mostly clear gold color with about an inch and a half frothy white head that stayed around for a while. There’s a decent amount of lacing. Not much to the aroma, it smells like floral/grassy hops and some grainy malt. The taste is similar to the aroma, but luckily the flavor seems stronger in comparison. Also, there’s some citrus noticeable. Mouthfeel/body is light, it’s a bit crisp with moderate carbonation. Not too bad, for the price it’s worth picking up once. $1.08 for a single bottle from Trader Joe’s, of course.

From 12 oz bottle from Trader Joe’s, about $1.17 for single bottle, poured into pils glass

Aroma: Nice pils and spicy/noble/floral hops

Appearance: clear, golden/orange, minimal white head

Taste: light bitter

Palate: light body, creamy texture, soft carbonation

Overall: A nice Pilsner with some nice noble hops. Good body and appearance. Slight DMS but not too much. Good crisp finish. Easy drinking, but not memorable.

Pours a crystal clear golden with a thick foamy white head. Decent lacing. Smells of lemon and grass. Tastes of the same plus bread and malt with floral notes on the finish. A very fine, well balanced Pilsener.

No retention and no lacing. Smells of biscuit, lemon and grass. Tastes of vegetable, floral and bitter biscuit. Semi-bitter aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Functional label on a standard longneck. Clear, brilliant gold brew with a thin, webby white head. Not much remarkable about the aroma - just lagery and a little sunflower seed note. Frothy mouthfeel, light mineral notes, very light bittering. Flabby body overall after the initial swig. Some final bitterness at the end. This is just a whole lot of nothing - no reason to buy this instead of Bud. TJ’s, Tallahassee.

Tallahassee, Fl - Trader Joe’s - 12 oz bottle. Sparkling medium golden pour, soft, snow white head, thin lacing. Aroma has some buttery accents, a touch of saffrron like spiciness. Classic pilsener flavor, a touch of bitter hoppiness, some bready maltiness, a touch of honey sweetness. Crisp mouthfeel. Pretty decent and a great price at TJ’s ($1.17).

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2015 12 oz. bottle from TJ’s. Poured crystal-clear golden orange with a dense, well-retained head. Nutty notes over light bready malts on the nose. The flavor is a bit of lemon and grass over soft bread and lesser caramel malts. Just enough bitterness to offset the sweetness. Pretty clean, well-balanced and tasty.
