MrChris (110), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA Jan 20, 2007 Caramel malt prevail on the nose. Red brown in color with a light tan healthy head. Gentle carbonation. Very nice caramel malted taste with a slight bitter ending. Easy frothyness on the tongue. A dark and smokey disposition make this bock a nice seasonal mood drink. Some may not like this beer, but I suspect they would be pilsner lovers. Ofortuna (322), Grafton, Wisconsin, USA Jan 17, 2007 Good introduction for those making the leap from macro to specific styles. Plus, the best part of this is that it costs next to nothing at 91 cents. Is it a world beater selection of a doppelbock.....absolutely not. Is it better than other cheap versions such as huber, Leine’s, et al? Absolutely. Decent malt character in line with what a bock should be and well balanced with a light smattering of hops. The only thing holding this back is a lack of "oomph" as other raters have put it. The body is on the thin side and they did skimp on the malt. However, for just a few cents what do you expect? The price alone makes this worth a try. blinesam (233), USA Jan 11, 2007 The best of the Trader Joes variety. This beer was filling, sweat and almost chocolately. Would get again. A value for 5.49 at TJ’s FezMonkey (268), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Jan 10, 2007 Clear dark mahogany color with a average quickly disapppearing head. Sweet doughy aroma with flavors of sugary toasted malts. A very good inexpensive doppel. Mangino (1027), Mississippi, USA Jan 7, 2007 Thanks to one of the guys I live with. Pours a clear but dark red color, small to no off white head. Aroma is cherry pits, musty and biscuity like a bowl of cereal in salt water. Drinking this is more salt and dark fruit, decent finish. Needs more mmmmph... hayduke (1621), Eureka, California, USA Jan 7, 2007 From bottle. Poured dark brown with tan head that lasted a while and left good lacing Nose of roast malts and chocolate. Smooth mouthfeel. Flavors of chiocolate, nuts, and fruits. Brisk finish. Good for a Trader Joe’s contact brew. brianprentiss (473), Portland, Oregon, USA Jan 2, 2007 Updated: Feb 13, 2008Very little head, malty sugar taste, hints of caramel on vegetables, kind of metallic aftertaste. Poor offering from TJ’s/Gordon Biersch.
Re-rate: I must have had a bad bottle the first time around. Still vegetabaly and sugary, but no metallic this time...its more like pork rinds. fuyajo (225), Portland, Oregon, USA Jan 1, 2007 Dark brown, slightly foamy mouthfeel. Slightly bitter and roasty. Not overwhelmingly so, however. Slight sweetness and creamyness. Must not be served really cold or it tastes pretty bad.
