UPDATED: JAN 18, 2008 New Grand Cru batch just hit the taps. It lacks the fruit peel acidity and off sour notes I’ve found in most others in this style. Not too sweet or yeasty and loaded with flavor. A pear note stands out most. Not complex but a lovely balance. Nose to after taste I really like this and it is not a style I usually like. Not flat but lacked head. This needs its own Whiteney beer category. The smoke proter I tried next was also great but I do not see it listed for the brewer yet . Those two and the barley wine are top notch but the rest of the offerings are less than mediocre. Still, this is excellent progress for this micro pub/brewer.

Growler from the bar. Poured a hazy golden brown color with a very small head. Nose of sour fruits. Palate full of sweet and sour fruits - apricot, pear and a little banana. Lots of yeasty flavor in this one, not a whole lot of noticable hop charcter. Aftertaste was somewhat tart and dirty. This one really stands out as one of their better brew, they need to keep this one going all year long!

Served with ab orange that matched the color of the beer very well, but also added some citrus that I didn’t really want. Good job on the sourness that went well with the caramel malt. Low on hops, for style. Not a lot of depth, but pretty good effort.

On draught at the brewpub in Madison, Wisconsin. Pours a semi-clear reddish and golden amber brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates clean. Aroma of sweet golden and caramel grains, candi sugar, some yeast, lemon and orange zest with a touch of cantaloupe. Taste is semi-sweet, full bodied, with flavors of candied caramel malt, candi sugar, yeast and a touch of orange zest. Finish is semi-sweet with some tropical fruit and multi-grain malt aftertaste flavors. Alcohol is a tad high but a nice sipping dubbel.

Overall, this was a fairly solid and balanced beer. The only weakness is a
thinness in the finish. A very well done dubbel but nothing that will change
the way you think about the style.
Aroma / Appearance - Honey, caramel, almonds and molasses were the
first things to come to mind when I closed my eyes. It seemed to be pretty
close to what I’ve come to expect from other beers advertising themselves as
’grand crus’. The body was a deep bourbon brown with mild carbonation and
Flavor / Palate - After waiting for the iceberg to thaw, I was able to
take a sip without getting frostbite. A rich complex mixture of cherry pie,
caramel, hazelnuts and a tinge of bitterness played across my tongue. Each
sip was well balanced and dense with a smooth finish. It did seem to thin out
a bit towards the end. Overall, I would consider this well done but not a

Pale gold color with no head. Aroma of banana and I think, maple syrup. Very sweet and syrupy up front, but not quite to that sticky sweet level. More banana and fruit with the slightest bit of corriander. Not bad, but way too thin.

Hesitant golden-orange in color and translucent all over with a creamy-meets-icy sheaf capping the top. Lemon meringue and soaked up grahams take the aromatic lead. Chiffon, Yoplait custard and Downy dryer sheets provide sequential wafts, along with an elusive presence of spray starch on strawberry angel food cake. Buttery banana meringue oiliness settles in for flavor. Melon and banana team for a fruity, concrete liquidity. Jury’s still out. Coriander and cream of ginger meet orange peel and paradise seed, deciduously keeping everything from gelling. Lemon chiffon, e.g. gestation via straw, and some graham cracker dust make it down the shoot as well. Misplaced starchy Laundromat bitterness creeps up on us. The acidic lemon breech and the Dawn dish detergent in between are just too counter productive to give this one the nod. Coriander hits lemon herb buttered croissants on its final leg.

Had this one on draught at the brewpub in Madison, Wisconsin. Hazy dark yellow pour with a thin white head, light orange and lemon nose, mild and malty taste, similar to a banana Now-and-Later, complex and a bit spicey. Good!

Draft at the brewpub. Poured a clear light brown reddish color. Head was thin and off white. A bit of lace was left behind at the end. Brown sugary aroma and flavor. Earthy spices, subdued orange, fennel, bran muffin, and alcohol flavors also emerged. Not bad.

Lightly hazed golden color with a smallish white head. LIght fruit and mild candi aromas. I’m catching flavors of watermelon rind and light alcohol. Hints of pale malt and candi. Very mild spice. The light fruit and especially the watermelon throw things off for me.
