1.9 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
No smell... well a bare hint of sugar. Colour is normal enough. No head after the few minutes I spent trying to smell something... The flavour initially was pretty plain and sweet. A few extra minutes of warming up and it is even more so...
This one is a bit like a cheap dessert wine. It just doesn't have the obvious layers of flavor to make it initially interesting, unfortunately it is a tad more expensive than a cheap dessert wine. I guess it hides the 8.5 well but then give me a bucket of confectioners sugar and I'll hide a lot of alcohol there too hehehe...
I note that some people compare this to Duvel which kind of surprises me, this has none of the complexity of Duvel.
I am quite disappointed in this one actually. Not that it is worse than other beers I have rated, say Steinlager or Old, but that I expect more from it.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Caramel in colour. Aroma is yeasty, with some sweetness and honey. Flavour was slightly sweet, some sugar and honey, spicy and some yeast. Finish is a sugary medium bitterness.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Light aroma. Bit acidic, gueuze-like. Wheaty, sweet too. Bright amber clear with big white foamy lacing head. Medium-heavy watery body - light syrupy - with low carbonation. Sweet, bit syrupy up front. Malty, candy sugar, caramel. Floral hoppy finish - bit salty. Low bitterness with pleasant sweet nutty after. Alcohol.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAR 6, 2004 Had this at the end of a tasting session and was just starting to get out of my tasting comfort zone so my marks may be a little high for now. From my experience its like a duval without some of the complexities of flavour and aroma that make duval the great beer it is. Nice head, some nuttyness with some spice and fruit characters, has what you'd expect from a belgian strong ale.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: MAR 7, 2005 Rerate: Found in a VB drinking mates fridge (yes there is a God!). Not a bad offering, big white fluffy head, gold body. Citrusy yeasty nose. Quite sweet initially with a decent hit of citrus to avoid being cloying. Finishes with some yeasty notes mixing with a touch of alcohol. Pretty good stuff.

2.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Some yeasty aroma but it is not strong. Very orange with high carbonation. Flavour for me was one-dimensional grapefruit sour. Did not notice any spicyness. Simplistic knockoff of Duvel.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
I was a bit diappointed by this one. Deep golden in colour, pours a big soapy head. Strong malt smell; the taste is initially sweet, with orange and yeasty notes, then turns bitter; it never gets too dry. Alcohol is a bit too evident in both aroma and taste - the aftertaste actually reminded me of malt liquor.

Another Duvel-imitation. Dark golden coloured. Yeasty, some sourness, pretty sweet.
