italarican (1470) - Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA - JUN 14, 2009
Draft at the brewpub. It’s a great looking pour, almost black with a small but moderately thick off-white head. Aroma of caramel, coffee, and nuts. Initial flavor is very good with dark and milk chocolate, caramel, and almond notes. As it warms, however, the hops seem to take over and turn the beer overly bitter, and this bitterness lingers long on the palate. I loved it at first sip, but the increasing bitterness made it a chore to finish.

rayOfBeer (656) - El Cerrito, California, USA - SEP 17, 2008
Poured from tap at Jupiter, icy cold, a black with brown hues and a very thin tan head. Aroma was mostly dark roasted grains and caramel. The flavor was bitter coffee, dark roasted grains, a floral peachy hoppiness, toffee, and a woody/grain husk astringency that turned tart/sour and charcoaly toward the end. Palate was dry throughout with a rather thin body for a porter and heavy tartness at the end. Overall, this was served much too cold and had to warm for full flavors to develop. There was a lack of malt sweetness to balance the harsher tones in this one. Ok at first but hard to finish the whole pint.

elcaballo (101) - Beverly Hills, California, USA - MAY 3, 2008
pours near black with some tan head...coffee and malt flavors dominate with some definate bitterness, not a bad beer at all but I find the mouth feel much thinner than i would of liked and i get a little burnt flavor out of it as well
