3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - FEB 7, 2012
Tasted this in The Esquire House, Glasgow (JDW) in November 2008. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear tawny red in colour with a thin buff creamy head. Sweet chocolate and apple notes in the malty aroma. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Mixed malts give a maltloaf base with tart redcurrant fruit evident. Spruce notes present in the dry hop resins giving a dusty aftertaste. Finish is again dry with woody cask notes with berry fruit. A decent complex Old Ale and well recommended.

Hinckley Spoons. Deep ruby with a persistent white collar and lace. Cherry stone and red berry aroma. Caramel and marzipan stillness, berry fruit, too much alcohol showing. Vanilla and Custard Cream malty afters. Thin and tired, but just about OK.
